The Sexiest Overland Campers You'll See All Day

E-mail Print PDF

alt

If you're a regular follower, you've undoubtedly seen countless overland vehicles among like likes of the Land Rover Defender, Jeep Wrangler, and Toyota Land Cruiser. But what you probably haven't seen are the big boys—the overland campers, that's because they're rarely found in North America, and it's not something you see every day. But luckily between the Abenteuer und Allrad show in Germany and the Overland Expo in the United States, we've been able to find a few. Generally built upon the likes of heavy-duty Ford trucks, Mercedes Unimogs, and MANN missile platforms, these vehicles will take you around the world in total comfort. Often outfitted with everything you'd find at home, from a dish-washer, washer and dryer, hardwood floors and the whole kitchen sink, its more like living in a small apartment than a vehicle. We just don't want to see the gas bill.

Check it out here.

La Aduana: Unimog eXtreme RV

You're looking at the first eXtreme RV (XRV) built by Global Expedition Vehicles. It's based on the Mercedes Unimog, a durable round-the-world capable platform with plenty of traction and a reliable diesel engine. Offered for sale at $185,000, some may initially balk at the purchase price, but consider the cost and rarity of the chassis, and that over $600,000 went into the initial build of the vehicle and it was proven via a sucessful tour of South America after it's completion. The vehicle is almost completely self contained and the ample interior space provides a climate controlled comfortable living environment. The current owners have just returned from 3 years of continuous adventure travel and have decided to settle back down.

(Image of outgoing model, not consistent with new design)

For years now we've been waiting for All Terrain Warriors to leave their native Australia and offer their fantastic 4WD campers to customers here in the United States. Finally, today is the day, they've just signed a strategic partnership with Sportsmobile West to import the campers, such as the Commando shown above, and assemble them on two different chassis available in the US: The Ford F-450 Cab/Chassis, and the Mitsubishi Fuso. They will also be working on a brand new model over the next few months, likely to be released at the Overland Expo.

La Aduana: VW Vanagon Westfalia TDI

E-mail Print PDF

If you're the kind of person who wants to live in a van down by the river...in Botswana, then this might just be your vehicle. The Westfalia is almost overland ready straight from the factory, it has a kitchen and a fold out out bed so you're comfortable nearly anywhere. This "Westy" as they're called has a distinct advantage over the other models on the market right now—it has a TDI engine out of a VW Jetta, so it has more power, and most importantly the engine produces significantly better fuel economy numbers. The Vanagon is incredibly easy to repair, and parts are available nearly everywhere in the world.

A Final Farewell to My Best Friend

E-mail Print PDF

We met online when I was in college, about 12 years ago. At the time I was looking for a partner to join me on winter snowboard trips.

Someone who was intrepid and would enjoy crazy adventures every weekend. Someone who wouldn't mind long road trips with lots of friends, late night partying, early morning hangovers, and... waking up on the beach.

You fit the bill perfectly.

La Aduana: 4WD Airstream B190

E-mail Print PDF

Here's a seriously rare vehicle - a 1993 Airstream B190 based on a Ford E350 platform, with a 4WD conversion kit from Advanced Adapters. The options on this vehicle are almost endless and it appears to be mechanically well maintained. The seller says that all it needs to hit the trail are a new set of tires and a new owner. For a buy-it-now price of only $24,000, this could be a Sportsmobile on a budget - with a touch of vintage Airstream design.
