Utah in the fall 2015 - 9 days, 475 off-road miles, and 14 hours of digging! (PICS!)

Damn - what an adventure. I really love your van, and the work you make it do. I was out there about a week after you and camped along Poison Springs Road with the same plan as you to cross into Canyonlands via the middle route/Dirty Devil crossing. But I heard about the wash out on the east...

Snow, Moose and a Jeep in the Never Summer Mountains of Colorado.

It's a good feeling to bail someone out of a jam like that. I'm sure they learned a few lessons about being prepared.

Scenic car camping spots accessible in CO right now?

Winter camping in Colorado typically involves driving over to Utah. :) If you want mountains, the options are pretty limited in the winter, especially around Boulder. Best bet is to head south to the San Luis Valley or Buena Vista area where they don't receive a lot of snow. More options for...

Is that a 105? The stance seems too level to be an IFS 100.

    KM2's vs ST/Maxx (sorry!)

It's likely that the OP has already made a decision, but I'll chime in with another vote for the ST Maxx's. For 95% pavement, you'll get better road manners than the KM2's. And in my opinion, the KM2's shine on the rocks, but not so much in the mud. Lateral traction is poor, and the lugs...

    '89 FJ62 with 6.2L diesel???

Not that much - 1/4 to 1/2 quart at most. He said it still holds 6 quarts with the oil filter. I don't know how the 6.2 diesel compares in size, but if you want to flex your front end it's probably necessary.

    1st or 2nd generation Tacoma?

^ I agree. Buy whatever you can afford, accounting for maintenance and any upgrades you want to make. Both models have pros and cons, but are fully capable of doing whatever you need.

    '89 FJ62 with 6.2L diesel???

My buddy that put Vortec in his 60 had to cut a section out of his oil pan and weld in a patch to get the proper clearance. His is still sprung under on 35's.

    FZJ80 vs BMW GS1200

We did some remote road exploring in Utah last spring with a couple of Land Cruisers along with a KTM and a BMW DS. The good: - One of the guys on a bike had a Ham radio wired into his helmet, and was able to relay back road conditions and obstables. - Trucks are good sag wagons for the...
