Nevada Strip AKA Gold Butte National Monument

This is great! Sounds like a wonderful trip so far!

New version of Gaia GPS released

What I do is select a point near the waypoint. If it doesn't look close enough for route accuracy, grab it and move it. When you grab an existing route point, it doesn't "select" an existing waypoint.

    The 255/85R16 Tire Official List

20 psi on DCEC was cushy on dirt roads, while 14psi on the MAXX is incredibly jarring. 34 psi for both of them on the road was equally different: MAXX lets you know about every pea sized bump, while the DCEC has a decent ride. I do agree that the MAXX is quieter, but not worth the horrible...

    The 255/85R16 Tire Official List

I haven't used the ST, but I just completed my first trip on Cooper ST-MAXX, 255/85-16. I can't recommend them, at least for my 5200 lb (loaded) 4runner, as they are way too stiff. Sure, they're probably super tough, but I plan to sell them (nearly new set of 5, make me an offer.) I'll go back...

New version of Gaia GPS released

This is all for Android, not sure of the differences with IOS, probably none for this discussion. In the western states, I use both "Gaia Topo" and "USGS Topo" for BLM. For NFS I'll add "USFS MVUM". I've rarely found a use for "USFS Classic" or "USFS 2016", but there are occasional nuggets...

That is great news! I look forward to seeing the improvements.

New version of Gaia GPS released

That could be, but I also have a Tab A which was new in late 2016. I suppose there could be some hardware difference to the 2017 model. Of note, when I download the first several maps, it is very fast (onto the SD card), but then the more I load, the slower it gets. Eventually the device won't...

New version of Gaia GPS released

Even with the subscription, the satellite imagery is useless, at least on Android (just in case there is a difference.)

    Jacks for expedition vehicles

I have an X-Jack air jack, because I used to overland with a unibody Subaru. It was great for that vehicle, as there were very few appropriate jack points, and I was worried that I wouldn't be able to use the OEM jack because access to the jack points may be compromized when out on a dirt road...

New version of Gaia GPS released

Update: I still have hours long map download times. It does behave a bit better if I just download one map at a time, but still takes forever. Oddly enough, the long download time makes me download more maps so that I can be certain that I have maps loaded for any impromptu trip. If I wait...

7 Websites/Apps I use when overlanding, vanlife, camping, finding gas, hiking, propane refils, dump stations.

4x4 Inclinometer Trial is okay on Android. I'd still like to find a better one.

    The 255/85R16 Tire Official List

I just replaced my worn out DC Extreme Country 255/85-16 tires with the same size Cooper ST Maxx. DCEC summary: - 25k miles on the set of five (5) tires, either highway getting to dirt, or driving on dirt and rock - Tread depth went from .57" to .21" in the 25k miles (actually closer to 20k...

New version of Gaia GPS released

Nothing super exotic: Mexico, Arizona and Utah. A month could easily be spent in any one of those areas, but my trip will allow me to have some quality time along whatever corridor I end up taking. I've used both "download along route" and map areas I've selected. The "DL along route" just...

New version of Gaia GPS released

I have the same problem and I don't think the card speed is an issue. Nothing else loads to the card slowly, just Gaia maps. That means the problem is with how Gaia uses a card in an Android phone. I never had a tablet before buying it specifically to use for offline maps, so if I had known...

New version of Gaia GPS released

Thanks, good (or bad!) to know that I'm not alone! I've now experienced the same issues on 3 different devices, so I was pretty sure that it wasn't a hardware issue, although all my devices are in the Samsung family. I too have not found an app that is better for my use case, which is why I...
