    Rath's Trailer build - We're done!!!

I really like your tire/wheel choice. Tall and skinny mud tires capture that vintage trailer vibe. I built around matching my truck for sake of simplification (and hand-me-down tires on the trailer) but much prefer the look of what you have there. Nice work.

The "expert" reply found on the etrailer link seems to have a logical answer: (paraphrasing) Yeah the clamp usually goes forward but it doesn't really matter. If you have off center springs however, the shorter end goes forward. Nice link, thanks.

That's interesting, never heard that before. Why is it supposed to be forward? I thought the clamp was just to keep the leafs from fanning out.

Pretty much anything in the appropriate length and weight rating is good, especially for free or already on hand. If starting from scratch I prefer Jeep CJ rear: common and inexpensive long enough for good performance but still fit under shorter trailers nicely the reproduction hangers are...

Oh yeah, you were tipped way back. I just looked at mine with an angle finder at 60 and that looks like about where mine is with a full load of oak firewood. Remember that shackle angle is relative to a straight line between the spring eyes, not the frame. You can have a pretty good shackle...

30 degrees from vertical. Most factory trailers I see are more like 15 degrees. I was a little concerned it was too far and the spring would contact the frame but that hasn't happened.

    PROJECT_ToasterCamp - 5x8 Cargo Trailer Conversion Build

Nice work on the CJ suspension! I have CJ7 rear springs with shocks under mine and like it very much. the reproduction Jeep spring mounts and u-bolt plates are significantly beefier than the standard trailer bits.

Yeah at first I was thinking it might be a Canadian street gang or something. :)

My 101A2, from start to 98% done

Well as they say, "you can't take it with you." I had mine a bit before there was much M101 trailer love on the interwebs so did my learning the old fashioned way - trial and error. Since that time the 3/4 tons have become a lot more popular (and expensive). If you can believe it, I got mine...

I have CJ7 rear springs and mounting hardware on my trailer with the aforementioned hot rod shocks and it performs well. It's about 600 lbs empty and usually less than 1500 loaded. It tracks excellent on the highway even with aggressive tires and doesn't bounce, foam the beer in the cooler or...

You should weigh the trailer "wet," that will help you pick the appropriate spring rate. If possible, switch from standard trailer springs to something longer and stronger. Front springs from an early flat fender Jeep is what's found under old fashioned quarter ton military trailers and those...

My 101A2, from start to 98% done

Okay thanks. I went through the entire ordeal some years ago. Installed the electric brakes no problem but found the stock drums wouldn't work. Okay no problem (so I thought) just get trailer drums instead. Only those had different outer bearings than the original hub/drums. Well, being a...

5X8 utility roof top tent trailer - Harold

Those Carry-On angle iron trailers are okay for the price but on the light duty side. I would beef up and extend the tongue if it were mine. You have a cambered axle so don't just "flip" it, weld on new perches. Some stabilizer jacks would be a smart addition for when the tent is deployed...

My 101A2, from start to 98% done

It appears that you were able to make the original hub/drums work with electric brakes. I tried that some years ago and failed; there was no surface inside my drums for the brake magnet to ride. As a matter of fact there were bolt heads there that immediately mangled the magnets once...
