AT Overland Habitat X James Baroud Pop up tent = Ultimate truck camper?

Over the past couple months, I've been researching every little aspect of building the camper that I can think of and I have a rough plan for it now: Pardon the very rough drawing as I do not have access to any form of CAD, but here's approximately how I'd want it to look. With how tight to...

    Rear ladder gear bag

Awesome work! I would also be interested if you do a run of these.

Thanks man! I'm pretty happy with it. If I decide to do a solid axle swap I'll probably do a redesign, but it'll work well for now.

    OVRLND camper topper

I'm probably not going to be able to start the build for a long while yet. Don't have any shop space and might be going back to school in the fall for a couple years, so it could be a few years away.

    OVRLND camper topper

I was planning on combining the pop up tent portion with either a flatbed, service body, or Aussie style tray bed. If I go the service body route, it would be more streamlined than a lot of the ones you see out there (shallower side boxes to maintain bed/living space, high clearance rear end...

    OVRLND camper topper

That looks awesome! I have been planning (okay, dreaming about is more accurate) on building something almost exactly like this. Do you have any estimates on pricing? (depending on what options people go for and what kind of vehicle it would be going on, of course.)

Got a bumper (and battery tray to give room for coolant overflow/windshield washer reservoir relocation in a few days) made up, pretty happy with how it turned out.

Do you have a link to any coverage/pictures of that pop up habitat?

    Yakima roof rack mounting strength

Plan for this summer is to rent a tandem when we head out to the coast to see if she actually enjoys it before I put down any cash. If she does, then we'll go from there.

    Yakima roof rack mounting strength

Awesome, thanks for the advice! As an aside, I could bypass the whole issue of needing to drill holes in both cab and canopy for a rack if I got a ladder rack. If I get one that can be mounted at the same time as the canopy, that gives me even more storage space/weight capacity through a...

    Yakima roof rack mounting strength

I'd be sticking to plastic kayaks, don't need anything fancy. Main reason I was looking at splitting the mounts was because my truck is only a short bed, which wouldn't give a whole lot of spread. When I had a roof box for my car, I noticed it was considerably more stable when I moved the towers...

    Yakima roof rack mounting strength

The kayak would probably be no heavier than 85 lbs and no longer than 19 feet. Looking at tandem touring kayaks right now for my girlfriend and I to get comfortable on before maybe looking at a single kayak for each of us down the road. Would it be a better plan to put both towers on the canopy?

    Yakima roof rack mounting strength

Hey guys! I'm looking into getting a roof rack for my truck and what looks to be my best option is to use Yakima's landing pads 6 and 7 so I can get the aero crossbars and towers that I want. I had a Yakima roof rack on my car a few years ago and it was practically bomb proof, so I have no...

AT Overland Habitat X James Baroud Pop up tent = Ultimate truck camper?

Ideally, I think I'd want to do the engine and solid axle swap at the same time but I haven't the foggiest on how to actually build them up. Especially when there's not exactly a guidebook for completely redesigning a vehicle (and least not that I can find, haha.) I could probably figure out a...

AT Overland Habitat X James Baroud Pop up tent = Ultimate truck camper?

I've been collecting pictures from all over on all sorts of things for inspiration, haha. I'd have no issues with starting to figure out how to fabricate stuff (there's pretty much no aftermarket for my Dakota) if I had the space for a workshop, but I do not while living in a condo. Although...

AT Overland Habitat X James Baroud Pop up tent = Ultimate truck camper?

...I think you found almost exactly what I was picturing in my mind. Only changes I'd make to that (the camper in the first picture) are hatches to storage cupboards in the walls, full pop up tent vs being hinged at the front, and no angle on the rear (although it does look hella cool and...

AT Overland Habitat X James Baroud Pop up tent = Ultimate truck camper?

Yeah, something like that but a little slimmer (following body lines of the cab instead of going straight up) was what I was thinking. Also totally agree on flatbeds giving more space, lots of empty space in the fenders I could make better use of as I only have a 5' bed so every little bit...

I was also tossing around the idea of taking the bed off and building a Flatbed/topper/tent all in one that could be removed as needed, so this is good inspiration.

Almost exactly like that, only difference being the top would completely pop up instead of being hinged at the front. That is super cool though.
