    The Maze ROF trip 9/19

Thanks Dan. Ace, don't worry about my head swelling. My contribution to the trip was minimal. I think going to The Maze and the people on the trip is what made it so good. We also had some luck on our side. Believe me, I had no visions that allowed me to pick the right people. Things just...

    Tea

I am not an expert in tea but normally drink it instead of coffee. I like it unsweetened hot or cold. I have tried many teas and like most of them but my favorite is Good Earth Sweet and Spicy. It has no sweetener but is naturally slightly sweet tasting from the blend in it. I also like...

It looks like no one is objecting. Go ahead.

    The Maze ROF trip 9/19

I wondered exactly where that photo of me was taken. I knew it had to be near the Icebox but did not realize you took it from inside the Icebox.

    The Maze ROF trip 9/19

Tom, you summed it up very nicely and I could not agree with you more. The only person I knew before the trip was Ace, but through the communications we had in preparation for the trip, I had a feeling we were all going to get along well. It turned out better than I even hoped for. I was...

    The Maze ROF trip 9/19

Yes, Phil had a very organized arrangement for his 80 series Landcruiser. Tom's 80 was set up very nice too.

    The Maze ROF trip 9/19

Harvest Scene is accessible from Maze Overlook. You don't have to go over the bad areas on page 1 to get there. In fact, you don't even have to go over Flint Trail to get there but that is half the fun. You can go into The Maze from Hite, head toward Flint Trail and then right before you get...

    The Maze ROF trip 9/19

Day 8 began with Tom headed to Green River to collect his Motorhome and trailer to tow his Landcruiser back home, Phil headed off to do a little more sight seeing on the way home while Dan and I headed to Wild Horse Canyon to take another hike in Little Wild Horse Canyon. Here is our invitation...

    The Maze ROF trip 9/19

On day 7, our journey continued with 4 of the remaining group (Dan, Phil, Tom and me). Instead of going back up highway 24 to catch the road that goes back toward Hans Flat, I found some county dirt roads that would eliminated backtracking on asphalt as well as well as some of the dirt road...

    The Maze ROF trip 9/19

I think Phil is spot on with his assessment of the trails in The Maze. The trail to Doll House is the worst that we encountered and did some spotting going in, in a couple places. This was just to insure no vehicle damage occurred. When we came out we knew what to expect and no spotting was...

    The Maze ROF trip 9/19

Phil, You got some great action shots and only you would think to include a beautiful scenery shot with a Wag Bag!

    The Maze ROF trip 9/19

On Day 6, I got up and decide to take the short hike to China Neck from Golden Stairs campground. It is a rock topped ridge that connects Golden Stairs hiking trail (which goes down to the trail in a canyon that leads to Doll House) and Golden Stairs campground at a higher elevation. Here is a...

    The Maze ROF trip 9/19

The Harvest Scene figures were pretty much life size for the tallest ones. Glad you appreciate our journey, we certainly enjoyed it.

    The Maze ROF trip 9/19

Thank you Tom, for posting those photos of one of the more difficult spots. Those were excellent shots and representative of the condition of that area. Those kind of shots are difficult to get. On Friday (day 4) we headed out of Doll House and back tracked through the rough stuff to get to...

    The Maze ROF trip 9/19

Most things are the same as in the 80s but two things are different. The trails are more difficult and more people (especially mountain bikers).

    The Maze ROF trip 9/19

First of all, I want to thank everybody on the trip for making this one of the (if not THE) highlights of my off-road adventures. Everyone participated to make this trip as near perfect as it can get. Mother Nature also saw fit to make things go well. I should add that this was the first ROF...

Perfect off-highway tire = LTX? What?

One thing I like about narrower tires is; it is easier to avoid some obstacles as opposed to just driving over them. Of course, it does take some effort maneuvering around them. Wider tires take up more space and can make it more difficult to avoid obstacles.

Perfect off-highway tire = LTX? What?

I run 31" Michelin LTX M/S tires for my street tires and like them a lot for that. I am on my second set now and got around 90K miles out of the first set. They still had tread on them but I felt uncomfortable driving in heavy rain with them. I switch to 33" BFG KM2 tires when I go off-road...

Open Differentials vs. Traction Control vs. Lockers

I drove a 1973 FJ55 Landcruiser off-road for nearly 15 years in all kinds of rough terrain with open differentials. Much of it was around Moab and Death Valley. The only time I got stuck was in Anza-Borrego when a washed out, 3 feet deep trench collapse and I fell into it. Once I managed to...
