Been a while since an update, lots of things have been happening. I bought a "junk" 98 runner from a local guy. It wasn't running but I had been watching him drive it for years and knew the transmission was good. My original trans developed a BAD bearing whine so I swapped the 98's trans into my...
I'm close to NJ, in the Newburgh NY area. Feel free to PM me with your ideas, maybe we can work something out! Here's a high clearance tube bumper I built for my 3rd gen. a few years ago. It's survived a guardrail hit and an end-over-end rollover!
A good friend of mine recently hit a deer and took out his factory front bumper. We decided the only logical thing was to make a new one.
His requests were:
-2" receiver for recovery and or potential winch plate mounting in the future
-flush mount Rigid amber fog lights angled towards the side...
If you remove all of the factory rack hardware, there are sliding nuts in the roof mounted track. All I did was make plate brackets that sit on the factory track and bolted to the factory sliding nuts. Kept it low as possible.
You're right on the money, Tim! That's exactly how he does it. Luckily the tent lives up there most of the year. Thanks for the kind words. Looking forward to seeing your set-up when you get it figured

He's a couple pictures of a rack I built for my buddy's FJ which carries his RTT. Definitely account for mounting hardware of your tent! Its almost too low to get a wrench in there.

I have also been kicking around the idea of a building a new bumper/tire carrier. We seem to have the same thought process with the bike rack on the swing out, but I'm worried about the bounce of a couple downhill bikes and rack weight. I think over time it would put some substantial fatigue on...
Thanks! The wooden carrier works pretty well. I built it because it was quick and cheap. I just used a few turnbuckles to hold it in place, but I would recommend strapping the tire down because it rocks back and forth a little. I put some cloth in between the tire and wood sides as well so it...
I say fire up your buddy's welder and make one! I built the rack out of some Uni-Strut channel that my friend gave me, expanded metal mesh, and some 3/4" square tube as the cross bars. I can't remember exact dimensions, but the rack is just wide enough for me to have welded some short "legs"...
I'm currently in a similar situation looking for a tablet mount for my iPad in my manual trans 4Runner. I have been more than impressed with my RAM mount products for my phones, so I'm leaning towards their Tab-Tite cradle and mounting one of the 1.5" ball mounts somewhere on my dash or console...
