Now that I think about it, I guess the leak could be coming from that o ring above the plenum and just pooling there.

Well, there's always something else. The Montero still doesn't seem to be running quite right, so I decided to do a smoke test on the manifold. This was my first time doing this, but I think it was successful. I saw smoke, and what appeared to be oil (maybe condensed mineral oil from the smoke...

Fuel economy and odd auto tranny behavior gen 3 montero

I'm late to the party, but ... what do you use to monitor trims? I'm using the Torque app with a bluetooth OBD2 adapter, and the fuel trim option is unavailable with my 3.8 Gen 3. Are there better apps for our rigs?

Klaus and I went wheeling for the first time today. I visited Kansas Rocks park for their Offroading 101 course. It's a privately owned, non-profit, park with some cool people running the show and giving instruction today. If anyone is out in Kansas and looking for a good mix of beginner up to...

Well, I poured water in the drain tray of the sunroof, and it flowed out the bottom of the drain just fine. So I guess the next thing to check is seams around the passenger footwell. I did just change the fender liner, maybe it has something to do with that...

Ahh, the learning continues. I took Klaus through the car wash the other day, and ended up with a bunch of water under the passenger side dash, including on some of the wiring harnesses over there?! Well, a day later, I shift into reverse and am greeted with a loud clunk and the dash lights up...

    Klaus - 2006 Montero Build

Okay, this was a productive weekend! Changed front differential oil (the old stuff was a nasty grayish green and smelled awful, not sure if that's expected after so many miles(?)) Changed transmission fluid (this is a useful video guide on that) Replaced front right fender liner (old one had a...

I got to learn about the IOD fuse today. "IOD" stands for "Ignition Off Draw" and it's the fuse(s) for the circuit(s) that draw power even when the ignition is off. In my Montero, that seems to be the radio and most of the interior stuff, including power locks, keyless entry, etc. The 10 amp...

How to Replace Fuel Pump Assembly on 2006 Montero 3.8 Gasoline/Petrol

Well, it still cranks a little longer than I'd like before turning over, but the RPMs don't die right after turning over like they used to, and seat of the pants it does feel peppier under full throttle. It might also be running a smidge cooler than it used to, but I'm not sure. Also, nothing's...

How to Replace Fuel Pump Assembly on 2006 Montero 3.8 Gasoline/Petrol

My 2006 Montero's been having issues with hard starting and what seems like loss of power on hills. The fuel pump also sounds pretty loud when the ignition is on and before I crank. With more than 150K on the odometer, as far as I know, the fuel pump has never been replaced. All this pointed me...

Well, the valley looked clean, but I eventually noticed some coolant splattering onto the airbox and based on the direction of the splatter it looked like it was coming from the cold side hose. I tightened up the hose clamp and coolant levels are staying totally steady now.

Finally! I pulled the struts, took them up to this awesome DIY Shop here in Austin. Using their wall-mounted spring compressor, I rebuilt the shocks properly and now the thing rides like a normal vehicle should. Steering feels normal, ride is smooth but firm, no bounce at all, very nice. I'll...

So I think I figured it out. The Bilstein struts ship with a washer that's supposed to sit between the dust boot and the lower bushing. The wide flat part of the lower bushing bears on this washer, and the other side of the bushing bears on the strut mount. When the spring compresses, this...

An update on the cooling thing. A few days ago, I ran a test. 1. With cold engine, fill coolant to fill line 2. Run engine, blast AC to create some load, later blast heat to exercise heater core 3. Turn off engine 4. Check the next morning after engine is cold In this test, once the engine...
