    $40 BaoFeng UV-5R Dual-Band Handhelds

I agree, I have an Icom and my buddy has a baoeng. I guarantee if we both dropped them from an 8 foot ladder my Icom would be the only one still working, plus its waterproof and I can get it fixed in the U.S. The baofeng seems to be a good disposable radio to throw in the glove box or go bag...

    Picking a new dual band

I like the digital over the air aspect, but not to keen on the internet part of it. If I want to send someone a message over the internet I'll just send an email. Unfortunately having no standard won't stop the digital, Dstar, Ecolink etc stuff, it's just slowing it down.

    Truck Topper/Cap Lift for camping

Around 1k is not that bad really. If you built this system from scratch by the time you sourced the actuators made all the brackets and wiring harness you would have $600-$800 plus into it. I looked into actuators for a pop up trailer and they can run $100 to $200 each depending on the travel...

Looking to buy a suburban, should I get 3/4 ton?

The late 90's don't have a TBI engine, they have the Vortec. Yes if you can find a 3/4 ton you should buy it. In Texas it's hard to find a 3/4 ton that doesn't have 300k on it. I have a 99 1/2 ton and it does fine, but every time I tow something I want more. I get 15-18 with the 5.7 if I...

    LED Copy Cats

I don't think it really maters, either you can afford a 1k light bar or you can't. I can't. Do the research on the Chinese brands and buy the best ones you can afford. I don't race through bfe at 100 mph so a couple hundred feet of visibility is fine with me. The only thing I did on mine is...

I just wish they would all agree on a single standard for digital and stick to it, but their all to busy trying to out do each other.

    Noob 2M Wiring Question

Just make sure the wire and fuse are rated for what the radio is rated for. My Kenwood sits at about 1 amp just being on, but when I key up the mic at high power it jumps to about 9 amps. It's rated for 13 amps. If your running more than one device on the same circuit at the same time it...

Congratulations. Did they let you try the General test? It's just about as easy to pass, just have to remember a few more freq's and some antenna stuff. I missed passing the General when I took my Tech by 2 or 3 questions.

    Picking a new dual band

Ham radio outlet just opened up a store about 8 miles from me so I got to put my hands on all the dual band mobile radios I was interested in. It was a little more than I wanted to spend, but I chose the KENWOOD TM-D710G. It has everything I could ever want to use built in so I will never have...

Just purchased a baofeng, do I really need a license?

Ham's do police themselves, in fact they volunteer to be Ham police and report violators to the FCC. You may not ever get caught but if you do there is a big fine and you will be charged with a Felony.

If your talking about CB side band, no you don't need a license but you have to buy a CB radio that does side band. It is not the same as Ham sideband. Amateur radio and CB do not share any frequencies. I know this because it was on the ham test I just took. Yes you do have to Ham license to...

Big Suburban for a Big Texan

I'm on a roll now, Just passed my General Class test this morning. Then I took the Extra class test and that's where my roll ended. True, I didn't study for the Extra but I might as well have been using a "Magic Eight Ball" to take the test. 50 questions and I only got a little more than half...

Big Suburban for a Big Texan

I got my call sign in December, but it was long and a real tongue twister so i decided to get a vanity call sign. It took about 4 weeks, I guess because of the holidays. There are so many restrictions on format I don't know how Vain they are. I chose N5MHQ. I could only chose N,Y,W for the...

    The Money Pit Ford Ranger

I also have a Ranger with the 4.0, plenty of power, but very over engineered and full of potential problems. It has 3 timing chains with plastic chain guides that get brittle and break. If you ever rebuild it make sure you replace those guides because if they break you have to pull the engine...
