Gen 3 Montero (3.8 gas) - Build / Repair / Maintenance - Advice & Opinions wanted (Costa Rica)

Just a caution on the low miles. For some reason these trucks are notorious for having rolled back odometers -- I've encountered several from shady sellers. Regardless they will still go over 200k miles easy. Unless you have verification otherwise, I would add a timing belt replacement to your...

    Strange alternator woes

Bought another mystery Ebay (BNR) alternator. Since there are no alternatives I'll just keep a spare one in the cubby.

    Strange alternator woes

Just an update that is not an update. Replacement alternator came in -- wrong unit. Waiting for the replacement again. Confirmed all connections look like new. Started working on the dual battery box and will place it by the passenger firewall. There is not a lot of room and standard tray will...

    Strange alternator woes

Thanks for the input. It is all bone dry and no leaks (yet!). Two of the failures were zero charge. One of the failures was likely the regulator as it overvolted (18v).

    Strange alternator woes

I should ask now as it will be easier than carrying a spare alternator for next time -- any recommended Montero Limited dual battery mounts/kits?

    Strange alternator woes

Had to do a quick recovery on my '06 Montero while heading to dinner tonight. Thankfully the truck made it to the parking lot before the battery gave up the ghost. The dilemma: I'm about to be on my 4th alternator in the last 20K miles. The truck is otherwise immaculate condition with nary the...

    110 purchase in UK

Yeah, it was a bit tongue in cheek. Love the program, but yeah Ed China is a slave worker. But in the end it is all for entertainment :wings:

    110 purchase in UK

Thanks for the inputs. I'll be about an hour north of London and I'm more than happy to take the train in, so no worries here on driving it in the city. I've started searching and I've found a couple of galvy trucks but I'm not getting too hung up on any individual one until I get out there. I...

    110 purchase in UK

After being away from Land Rover's for several years, I'm looking to get back into one. My company has decided to send me the UK for 2 years starting in January, working just outside of London. I will certainly miss the Sonoran weather (and food), but it should be a great new experience and I'm...

Gen 3 evap system fumes smell

Kyle, Did you ever get this resolved? Occasionally I see the same fuel smell issue on my '06. It is sporadic that I've been unable to track it down. I've had the same fueling issue and today I had a hard time getting any fuel in it without the pump handle triggering. -justin

Anyone have a rebuilt Gen 3 HBB (Brake Booster)?

I have a good one (used) in my garage that one could possibly pry from me. I was holding onto it in case my '06's ever died, but with only 67K on the clock it will likely be years before I would need to address it.

Rear door ladder for a Gen 3?

I know folks have used DII ladders on their Gen 2/2.5 trucks -- not sure if they would fit on the Gen 3's.

I wonder if it will allow me to disable my $@%! TPMS and get rid of the flashing light.

    3rd Gen Lifts

The Montero OME springs are approximately the same length but much thicker. I can't speak to the specific Montero issued shocks, but my past OME shocks for other vehicles have been longer. I plan on going OME HD all around as I've had good luck with them in the past (although I regret not going...

Gen 3 BG EPR Flush/Rotella T6 Oil Change WOW! Thoughts? Experience?

? M1 HM is 1000ppm M1 5W30 is ~800ppm (SN compliant) Sure, some of their M1 Racing oils are well above 1600ppm, but these are not street oils and not relevant for comparison. I'm a BIOG member as well...

Gen 3 BG EPR Flush/Rotella T6 Oil Change WOW! Thoughts? Experience?

For those who have had success, great. Keep using it. T6 is 1200ppm ZDDP Current SM/SN energy conserving motor oils are limited to 800ppm due to zinc/phos issues with modern cats (lobbied by automakers due to U.S. emission warranty requirements). While rated for gasoline motors, Shell does not...

Gen 3 BG EPR Flush/Rotella T6 Oil Change WOW! Thoughts? Experience?

T6 is a great motor oil, but I would be hesitant to use it in an oil burner. It has a pretty high zinc content which is great for wear protection, but can quickly damage the 02 sensors. My '02 was an oil burner and I briefly ran T6. Mine threw an 02 code after about 6K miles.

    LSD or not?

All limited's have the 5spd/4.3 combo. XLS models went to 5spd/4.3 combo in 2003, but had 4spd/4.9 until then.

Does GEN III 3.8 uses 93 premium gas grade

When I was living in Cary there used to be a corner shop (Kildaire & Maynard) that sold 103. Ran that in my turbo'd Miata when I had the boost dialed up. I'm running premium in my '06, but I've yet to test it with lower grade (I haven't driven it enough to go through more than a few tanks). My...

Mr.Roboto Shogun! My 2005 Montero Limited

I have that Curt hitch -- It isn't any better or worse than any other hitch out there. Hangs too low in my opinion (although I may flip the receiver one of these days) and the powder coating was already damaged.
