    EarthRoamer XV-JP "Northwest Edition"

Here's the thing- the original is a clever design, and I love that. Clever designs don't always work, though. It seems like inclement weather, high wind, cold temps, that's when you really want a camper. So, however clever it is, it needs to do bad weather reasonably well. If it's nice out, a...

    EarthRoamer XV-JP "Northwest Edition"

I wanted the original concept to work so badly- most campers are either too big and heavy for a good trail or too small to live in, and this just seemed to balance the two so well. But everyone seems to think it didn't work. Never having seen one in person much less used one, I just have to...

    ExPo's Lexus GX470 Overland Project

I also intend to keep the air-rear, and DIY'd a couple of 1.25 spacers (yet to be installed). Did you shim the rear height sensors or adjust the links? The shims seem to be more common, but the links appear to be readily adjustable, unless there aren't enough threads available. Also very...

You guys are a classy pair- it's nice to see your mutual respect. Whatever that amount was, I'm sure it was a fair price for great work.

Scott, How are those tires? Thinking about a set in 265/70/17 for my GX twin.

    ExPo's Lexus GX470 Overland Project

Our '07 is stock in every way and gets 20+mpg on the highway, lightly loaded, a/c on and 80+mph across the CA desert (CHP verified, unfortunately). This is according to the trip computer, but I have no reason to doubt it's very far off. (City driving is closer to 16mpg.) Weight and aero of stock...

    ExPo's Lexus GX470 Overland Project

There's about 4 gallons in the tank when it's "empty," presumably to keep the fuel pump cool. At least, that's what it seems like. We've filled from the warning light and never been able to get more than 19-20 to go in. It's the same with my Infiniti, where a "20 gallon" tank won't ever take...

    ExPo's Lexus GX470 Overland Project

That's a deal killer for me. Plus the cost and reduced departure. The license plate and reverse lights are easy. Wouldn't a 265/70/17 fit underneath? I'm asking because I'll probably go that route when its time for tires on our '07. (White, Scott's clone before he started making it all awesome.)

Is that a trick of the photo, or did the tire rack distort the sheet metal a bit?

How to make a cheap isolated dual-battery setup for $50

This may all be true. Yes, I'm basing the "40amp" on the charging circuit fuse. I have no idea the gauge of the wire. Chronically undercharged- possibly so; but we used shore power when available so this might not have been an issue. So what can a non-engineer do to figure this out without...

How to make a cheap isolated dual-battery setup for $50

As I said above, the built-in charge circuit worked for me. I was really looking forward to someone with more knowledge to chime in, and hopefully someone will. I *suspect* that the 40a circuit might not charge as fast, but that may be a non-issue depending on your setup, how long your engine...

How to make a cheap isolated dual-battery setup for $50

My experience is limited to my travel trailer that also had dual 6v in series, and our Toyota Sequoia charged them just fine (or so I assume) from the 40amp charge circuit that was built in to the truck. Maybe it would charge slower, I don't know. Serious question, nothing smart alec about it...

How to make a cheap isolated dual-battery setup for $50

I got the idea for my setup from our camping trailer. We had two 6v golf cart batteries in series to power the trailer, charged either by shore power or the trailer battery charge circuit. It worked fine there, so I just adapted the idea to a portable battery box. Maybe it doesn't charge as well...

How to make a cheap isolated dual-battery setup for $50

Yes, I've done it for years. I have a deep cycle battery in a box that I move from vehicle to vehicle, where ever the fridge is going. I've wired a 7-pin trailer plug to the charge circuit only (2 wires). The plug goes into the trailer socket next to the hitch, and through the back hatch. When...

How to make a cheap isolated dual-battery setup for $50

Of course what he's saying is that a solenoid presents a fire risk. Of course it might- anything added to the system presents a new possible source of failure, from a poor quality part to a poor installation. And even the factory system carries a risk of fire (Ford cruise controls, anything...
