    My Journey

Only two things I liked about the campground in Arches:. 1. You don't have to worry about timed-entry with campground reservations. 2. Some pretty good hiking trailheads in the campground. Otherwise, I thought it(the campground- not the park) was very overrated. Sure, there's some beautiful...

    at overland atlas

Are you talking while deployed or while driving? Again, I have the Summit which -while driving -is identical to the Atlas. I feel the streamlined shape with sloped walls helps it cut thru the wind better. In fact, in two years of having it mounted full-time on my Tacoma I have been averaging...

    General gripe

North Face is now part of Vanity Fair. Mountain Hardware is now owned by Columbia. You're only going to keep seeing a sea of clothing at major outdoor retailers because, like others have said, it's where the PROFIT comes from. Socks are the most profitable thing at the place I work! Not...

Do you actually use or need a pass thru window from camper to pickup?

Sure, if a thief is determined enough they can get into anything. My truck doesn't have power locks for the tailgate, but I know a pry bar is all really needed to pop-open the back panel that sits ABOVE the tailgate. I keep everything locked at all times and just hope the casual opportunist...

Do you actually use or need a pass thru window from camper to pickup?

No front slider here! In fact, I opted for ZERO windows in my AT Summit for security(not really a factor with the front slider) and insulation(definitely a factor). Also, it allowed me to place my galley up front leaving me still with 5 feet of space in my long bed Tacoma!

Small electric heater for SUV camping

I have a few things I do for the cold weather in my truck camper. Mine is fully-insulated with only a couple windows and those have insulated panels over them. I realize you have a van which is probably more space you're trying to warm and more windows, but maybe this will help? First is a 0...

Roof color on wedge canopy camper

I haven't heard any complaints about darker roofs making the inside hotter, but I suppose it makes sense? However, I will say from personal experience having a white interior really opens up the space visually in the tight quarters of our wedge campers!

    New CHEAP satellite messenger!

I would give it a chance to see how it works for you! The Motorola uses a different type of satellites which are in High Earth Orbit(~22,000 miles) AND are geostationary(they move with the planet). What this means is they will take longer to send/receive signals than the Iridium network used...

First Alu-Cab Canopy Camper on 1st gen Tacoma Xtracab*

Why the switch? Not trying to be snarky or anything...I just like the look of the old set-up better! Maybe you needed more room? Anyways...congrats on the new topper!

Texas to Alaska to Texas. 2020 Honda Accord Hybrid driving on the Dalton Highway and the Dempster Highway. July/August 2023.

Great pics! I just got back from Glacier NP a few weeks ago. Truly one of the most beautiful places I have ever been! I missed-out on the big horn sheep, but I did see a bear while there. Also, all the dead trees on the east side of the park was surreal! I think a major fire went thru there...

    New CHEAP satellite messenger!

Being so new, I'm still learning myself as I read more into it. An article on xda-developers.com stated this: Those sending messages will need to download and set up the Bullitt Satellite Messenger app on their phone, but what's great about this system is that those receiving messages do not...

    New CHEAP satellite messenger!

You are absolutely correct on PLBs! They utilize a 3-layer system(GPS, radio frequency, and homing beacon) to send an emergency signal. The difference- like you mentioned- is there's ZERO two-way communication. Also, the battery has to be replaced if an SOS is triggered as the device will...

    New CHEAP satellite messenger!

Not sure if anyone has heard, but Motorola just released a new two-way satellite communication device. Its called Motorola Defy and it links with your Android or iOS smartphone via Bluetooth to send/receive text messages or activate an SOS independently. The thing that sets this unit apart...

    Super Pacific/Wedge Camper Bug Nets

Oregon AT has just released a really nice bug screen for the rear on AT toppers. It is custom made to fit those particular ones, but who knows if it will work with other brands? I just received mine yesterday and although I haven't installed it yet, the finish is top-notch!

Our Solar System: 300W of solar - Yeti 1500x

Thanks! One last question on your set-up: I've heard the flexible panels can get HOT if glued down directly to the roof. Is it a good idea to layer some thin corrugated material under the panel to dissipate the heat? Maybe it's not as big a deal as im thinking it is...

Our Solar System: 300W of solar - Yeti 1500x

Is there extra maintenance for having the panels mounted on the exterior of your camper? I already have a Biolite 1500 and a couple of their portable 100w panels. I'm thinking of getting a 185w Sol-Go flexible panel for the roof of my camper since the Biolite can take a maximum input of 400w...

Pop-up versus hard-side height and fuel economy survey

I live in an apartment so I can't take the camper off when not using it. Also, it's my daily driver and stays on year-round thus - YES...fuel economy is a concern for me. Even if it's just a couple extra MPGs lost like the above example that would be $70/month at just 1000 miles. I consider...

LOVE the new AT Overland topper, but how do you deploy the awning mounted up there?

    Rate my First Aid kit

Reading this thread inspired me today to fill the empty first aid bag I have in my camper! I went to an actual safety supply store in my area and they got me the 'basics'. Gloves, gauze, ointments, bandages, dressing, antiseptic, and pain relief. My background is former licensed EMT, but I...
