What do you use for a truck gun?

Darn SA, changing up names again; when did they add that to the line up? Historically the "tankers" were chopped Garands. I do like that model a lot though- I wish the shorter versions were available when I bought my NM model. I think 18" seems to be about the sweet spot on that style .308...

What do you use for a truck gun?

SOCOM 16, not a tanker. The tanker was the name commonly used with the chopped Garands. ;) Really handy little gun with a punch (on the heavy side though). https://www.springfield-armory.com/m1a-series-rifles/m1a-socom-16-rifles/

Where to mount my kayak? Side mount or HF trailer?

I do not like hauling a trailer if I can help it, that said, when I was in the VW bus scene a lot of people had the cheap Harbor Freight trailers. VW people tend to be frugal (read cheap) and the HF trailers fit the bill (I see they've gone up a lot). For hauling boats you need to extend the...

Hella Rallye 4000 - Euro vs FF Driving beams

I had the Euro Rallye 4000 full sized on my 1st gen Tacoma (with 100watt bulbs) before swapping to the compacts (also 100 watt bulbs); I put them on my 2nd gen when I got it (halogen obviously). Hella used to have the light pattern diagrams on their website but it I didn't see them when I just...

    Birthday gun for myself.

For sheer fun, it's hard to beat a lever gun in .38/.357. You can load it mild or to the top of the specs for .357 and it's still not bad (although you'll definitely know the difference between a mild 110gr .38 and and a hot 180gr .357). A .357 from a 16" barrel is almost like a different...

Cooler mods: Has anyone done the foam mod?

Back to your cooler, it used to be somewhat common to bury the cooler if you were going to be in the same location for a while. You can add a blanket or whatever as insulation on top then put something heavy on it to keep critters from digging at it in the night. We did that when I was in...

    Costco (WaterPORT) 8 gal / 30 L water tank -- pressurizable, rooftop-mountable -- $280

https://expeditionportal.com/forum/threads/pressurized-scepter-jerry-can-faucet-and-shower.76944/ I seem to recall someone posting a thread where they used a submersible pump* also and there have been a couple of people who built pump set-ups using one of the Shurflo (and similar) pumps...

    Costco (WaterPORT) 8 gal / 30 L water tank -- pressurizable, rooftop-mountable -- $280

I think I'll stick to the cheap homemade PVC pipe version for that price. I want to say I had maybe twenty bucks in the last one I helped a friend build but I know the prices on everything in the big box stores have gone up.

    Potable Water Can?

Heck if I know, I'm still using a couple of old blue Coleman cube style and a dark blue upright plastic container (Jerry can style). Probably got BPAs or whatever cancer causing agents they banned but like the Energizer bunny, they just keep going and going so I still use one or more of them...

    kitchen to go

Looks like the old chuckboxes we had in Boy Scouts; I think some of the real Boy Scout handbooks had plans on how to make them. We had legs we could add as well in case you didn't have a tailgate or picnic table handy. The white interior definitely helps brighten them up and makes it easier to...

Cargo Baskets - Show me how you secure your load!

That's funny, I use one of the HF cargo carriers as the basis for my basket as well but I went with the black steel one (https://www.harborfreight.com/500-lb-capacity-deluxe-cargo-carrier-66983.html). Like you I omitted the 2x2 hitch piece but I made an eight inch (IIRC), extension for the...

Cargo Baskets - Show me how you secure your load!

Those and the Apache cases from Harbor Freight are popular with some of the Tacomaworld members. Even if you labeled it recovery gear or somesuch, around here some troll would break into the thing hoping it had a firearm in it.

    Smaller camp stoves?

My Jetboil lives in the back of my truck but like most of us, I've got multiple stoves including a couple of Coleman's. Before the Jetboil, I kept my old single burner Peak 1 in the truck and I will carry a two burner Coleman on trips, especially when it's cold (I've got a propane adapter for...

ABS Pipe Water Storage / Shower Question

I should have added, I put the air valve on top to help prevent water getting into it (and it was easy for my friend to stand on his slider and use a bike pump). Also remember that you can't fill the tube all the way with water unless you are going to connect some sort of constant air supply*-...

ABS Pipe Water Storage / Shower Question

Insert all of the usual disclaimers. There are lots of way to skin this cat but the one I helped a friend build was schedule 40 which is definitely heavier and stronger than it needs to be but he had the pieces already. A rounded cap on the front (facing forward into the wind), flat on the...

Where are all my MilSurp equipment fans at?

A surplus poncho lives in my truck as does at least one wool blanket depending on the season. There are some pouches I like including a leather one that was designed to carry cartridges on stripper clips; it carries my firestarting stuff and some other small kit (repair kit, whistle, etc) on my...

Want to switch to an oversized wool blanket for my pop-up camper. Suggestions?

Yeah, that doesn't make any sense unless you're allergic to wool or you have a cheap, rough blanket. I've got a couple of surplus blankets, some old USGI OD green ones and my favorites, the older Italian Officer's blankets that came into the country in the early 2000s. Wash in Woolite or other...

How noisy are aluminum storage cases?

Why not just spray (or roll) it with bed liner if you're worried about noise?

I need some cheap recovery boards for snow and mud... Any suggestions?

Honestly, if it were me today, I'd try to find some of the fiberglass walkboards/grating like Peter_n_Margaret posted. It'd probably be cheaper, easier and work better in the long run. If you can't find any surplus/salvage, Granger and other places sell it in various sizes including sheets- it...
