    New Member introduction.

Welcome, RED. Hope all of your modification ideas work out. I haven't been keeping track of the new 4x4 options available today, but I had an OX locker in my Jeep Wrangler and it was a manual, wire controlled unit. Our old Cherokee as well as our Bronco II had ARB air lockers. The Cherokee...

Couple questions on 10m - license, equipment

I'm probably posting too late, but my 2 cents is, buy a used Icom IC-706MKIIG, Icom IC-7000 or a new or used Yaesu FT-857D. All band/all mode is the way to go.

    The Owyhee

Sorry about the late post. I enjoyed your trip report. We have been to several of those locations and would like to explore the area further, but don't get out much anymore. Your photos and write up made me feel like I was right there with you. Thank you!

    Wife Got Licensed

Being retired made it easier for both of us because we had the luxury of time. Studying for the Extra takes a lot of time when all you have is just a basic education in mathematics and absolutely no training in electronics. Neither of us are big time radio operators. We don't spend much time...

    Wife Got Licensed

Oh my! Within the past month Evelyn got her Tech license, upgraded to General Class, changed her call sign to K7OMY (Oh My!) and is now reading the Amateur Extra book.

    Wife Got Licensed

Thanks. She had no prior experience at radio, but felt it was necessary to learn for emergency communications. Chances are that if we have an emergency it will be me that needs the help and she the one who calls for it. We have Icom 706MKIIG's in our backroads truck and in our daily driver so...

    Personal Emergency Experience Last Night

I'm no expert at this, but in my opinion those hams on the 2m net should have been publically shamed. It makes me angry that their actions, or lack thereof, reflect on the rest of us. Hope all is well between you and the repeater folks nowadays.

    Personal Emergency Experience Last Night

Hi, Mike, good to hear from you, too. All of our communication around this event was on 146.52 simplex. Our friend who was broke down has HF/VHF/UHF capability in his rig as well as quite the portable unit in a back pack. Since he was sitting at nearly 5000 feet he made most of his 2 meter...

    Personal Emergency Experience Last Night

Well, thanks, but it was Don (KC7FFK), who drove up from Grandview, WA with his 1 ton truck and car trailer, about 100 miles each way, who saved the day and did all the work. I was just along for the ride and documented the event for the forum.

    Personal Emergency Experience Last Night

That's great! Your story sounds like mine. I was on the fence over Ham Radio for years, but when we started exploring in SW Idaho, SE Oregon and N Nevada, miles and miles of sagebrush country and up to 100 miles from civilization, I decided it was time to improve things in the communications...

    Personal Emergency Experience Last Night

Good grief! What kind of dopes were participating in that net? It's hard to imagine anyone being that crass, ham or no ham. Probably a bunch of old guys (like me) who completely forgot about you. So what did you finally do to get help? . We always carry a SPOT Satellite Messenger. Ours is...

    Personal Emergency Experience Last Night

Yes and no. There are several "nets" on various bands, each organized by local hams, some with a theme, some without. We don't have an emergency only net or frequency in this area, but I imagine there are some places that do, Moab and the Rubicon come to mind. I am only speculating and don't...

    Personal Emergency Experience Last Night

It's possible, you never know just how anxious a person might be under those circumstances. I know he tried calling for help on several repeaters, some of which were probably SAR machines, before he finally made contact with someone on 146.52. But, I haven't heard anything about SAR being involved.

    Personal Emergency Experience Last Night

Last night, Sunday, 7/19/15, I was home and talking with some local hams on a 10-meter net when a friend of ours, Chad (KD7KJF), broke in with a call for help. He and his wife, daughter and puppy dog had been driving backroads in their Jeep Cherokee when they broke down with engine problems...

    Picking a new dual band

Good choice. It will do the job quite well and I am sure you will be happy with it. And way to go on studying for the General :coffee:

    Picking a new dual band

Maybe you have already purchased a radio by now, but since the thread is still open I will take the opportunity to add my 2 cents. "HenryJ" mentioned in an earlier post that a good software program is important and I heartily second that statement. Check around and find out which brand radio...
