I'm no expert at this, but in my opinion those hams on the 2m net should have been publically shamed. It makes me angry that their actions, or lack thereof, reflect on the rest of us. Hope all is well between you and the repeater folks nowadays.

Yes and no. There are several "nets" on various bands, each organized by local hams, some with a theme, some without. We don't have an emergency only net or frequency in this area, but I imagine there are some places that do, Moab and the Rubicon come to mind. I am only speculating and don't...

It's possible, you never know just how anxious a person might be under those circumstances. I know he tried calling for help on several repeaters, some of which were probably SAR machines, before he finally made contact with someone on 146.52. But, I haven't heard anything about SAR being involved.
