Jeep is up at Whistler BC this week and allows drivers to test out some of their vehicles on a short 'off road course' (a couple of steep gravel corners, a steep but short incline, and a section of logs and rocks to cross) which almost any car with limited off-road capability but decent...
Like others have noted, Outback is great car, but different category. On a practical basis it would make sense, perhaps the Forester XT would be the better choice, closer off road specs to the Discovery Sport and better off the line performance. The Jeep Cherokee Trailhawk would be the better...
I saw this link to a company in the UK that provides rebuilt Defenders to the U.S. or Canada. These are either 25 year old trucks (US)or 15 (Canada) rebuilt to original specifications. Not inexpensive, but the trucks look great. Note : Apologize if posted by others earlier, but I searched and...
A Canadian firm that produces a reproduction of the German Pre-WWII Jeep. Article below. Also a link to firms web site. Appears to be a small engine, RWD only with 11 inches of clearance.

Like other folks here, started by looking at 2013 4runner TE and drove both it and the 2013 Xterra Pro 4X. In my case I preferred the smaller size of the X, but did like the 4runner features more, but not for another 10k+. Much better pricing on the X and I have been very happy with it over...
The new 'trail rated' version of the Cherokee. Low range, locking rear diff and approach and departure angles over 30 degrees. Video review below.

Both could easily handle your needs. Drive both, consider benefits of a pick-up VS an SUV. You already know Jeep, and Tacoma is well known as well by most. Personally I would focus on why a pick-up or SUV, and then consider brand. And if you decide on mid size pick- ups I would add the...
Assuming you are referencing new then I would say a Forester, but recognize that this vehicle is for light to moderate off road use at best. It has great AWD, decent approach and departure angles, but add some good tires!
If an older model, some of the old Loyales with two speed transfer...
Similar for me. It took the dealer some time to find the Xterra P4x I wanted and I came very close during that time to getting a Frontier. The SUV Is a better fit for my needs, but I believe the Frontier to be one of the best trucks and underrated by many (Four Wheeler has always given it a...
Looks similar to Wrangler Duratracs and I would expect similar performance overall (Kelly owned by Goodyear as well). The Duratracs have the severe winter tire symbol, do the TSRs? If so, likely almost exact same tire. Look good too!
I thought same. Two low mileage gx470s that are for sale locally. One is a 2004 with 58k km (approx. 38,000 miles) and the other a 2007 imported new from U.S. with 42,000 miles. Both appear in great shape, but neither have KDSS. Would lack of KDSS be game changer?
LR4 (Discovery 4) but with a diesel engine in Australia.

I've taken a similar kite on solo backpacking trips-nice to fly on a remote peak miles from anyone. I did pick up a small stunt kite a few years ago which adds a greater element of fun to flying a kite. A bit too big for adding to my pack (albeit still very light), but great for days at the beach.
Nice job Paul! Did the air bags carry over? In a previous post I noted a local Trail edition with leather (since sold at dealer), and I expect the seats were done aftermarket but looked good. Leather was similar, but lighter color in center portion, darker on sides. I prefer yours. Funny...
First mods, and looks great. I expect it will drive better as well!
Paul, how much of a lift does this result in? I am a newbie when it comes to modifications so appreciate your updates. I expected first mod to be a lift and new tires -probably the only real weakness of the 4RTE (especially...
Thanks Paul for walking through the rationale. A good choice regardless, but interesting to hear your views behind the decision. As for Leather seats, a local Toyota dealer has the same truck but with leather seats. I don't know if it has the seat heater though. It is a 2011 Trail Edition.
