20” Unimog rims on a Mercedes 814 DA

Several threads have discussed the choice of tyres for the Vario. I use Michelin XZL 275/80R20 on 9x20 Unimog wheels and very happy.

    815da and big wheels

Hi Andy I fitted 9x20 Unimog wheels with 275/80R20 XZL Michelin tyres on my 814DA yr 1997. I only had to do very minor alterations. On the picture the white Varios have these tyres. You could also use 17" wheels and for example Toyo Open Country tyres.

    Vario tyres

Have you looked at Mitchelin XZL 8,25R16? I myself use XZL 275/80R20 for my Vario DA 814 4x4 and like them very much.

bigger diesel tank in Vario 814DA?

Hi Olaf There was a discussion on the forum last year about Vario fuel tank. One tank is ideal but you may not have the space. Myself have an auxillary tank with a switch and it works well. http://forum.expeditionportal.com/threads/158405-Vario-fuel-tank? Good luck with your travells.

For my Vario I put another 70 l MB tank symmetrically. Total capacity 140 l which is not much.

    Vario project started

I began with fixed bolts behind the rear axle in my Vario, but had problems with broken bolts. So now I have 2 fixed points on each side one in front of and one behind the axle and then spring bolts both in front and towards the end. Have not had any problems after that in the rough terrain over...

    A new vario project

It was the easy and least expensive option to buy a second hand caravan half price. I had to make a mounting frame for it which is fixed to the chassis with spring bolts. I have thrown out the gas heater and gas fridge and installed a compressor fridge and Webasto air heater. So in fact the...

New member from Norway, soon to have a new truck!

Congratulations on your expected baby. Being a vet myself I can confirm that you can not bring your dog to Iceland for a holiday, sorry. Seiping and microcut must be the same thing. It is commonly practiced over here and I have been thinking of having my XZLs done. I am told there are not...

New member from Norway, soon to have a new truck!

Hi Julius The XZL are not good on slippery roads. In Iceland it is common to "microcut" the tyres. It is effective and I am told that "microcut" tyres last longer. The fuel figures are something to be expected. 22litres/100 km is quite reasonable I should think. Is it Iceland this summer...

Jostein I hope you are not too confused after the photos of Varios in Iceland. I think it is important to realize that the Vario is not the perkiest of trucks only 140hp, not liking much head wind or hills. Hence a light and compact box has an advantage. Look forward to following your...

Ian I certainly had the stability problem you described on your thread on the 10R17.5 tyres. I have not experienced any problems after switching to the XZL tyres, BUT I have only done some 200 miles. The single fitment is causing this, but I think you could reduce the problem with a wider...

    Vario project started

The wheels 17 x 11.5 are made in Iceland. The rims come from the US but have to be widened and fitted with a new centre. I would be a little worried that these tyres dont last long in the lava fields. The XZL are 8 ply rating and should take the rough terrain better. Look forward to seeing...

Hi Jostein Take two in inserting the pics. I have now driven more than 300 kms on the Michelin XZL 275/80R20 and very pleased. The handling issue described by IanC and I am familiar with on my previous Continentals LDR 10R17.5 have greatly reduced or disappeared. I had to do a minor cut-out...
