    affordable (i.e., used) ADV machines

I recently had two bikes stolen--a KTM 950 and a BMW 1150GSA--so I had to get myself mobile again on the cheap. Based on my common usage I needed a bike that leaned more towards street with a limited amount of dirt, something more like my BMW than the KTM. Singles weren't really in the cards...

    Why do I want APRS???

Too many hams see aprs as something that relays your location to the Internet. I like it for the potential of local device to device communication without reliance on infrastructure. If you are never out of cell range, there are a hundred apps that will work better than aprs.

    HAM study guide

And technically, I think you can mis every technical question and still pass. I read the ARRL study guide cover to cover, and fretted a lot, and two days before the test I realized it wasn't hard, so I dropped studying the tech questions, and studied the general questions for 2 hours for two...

    HAM / Alaska / 2M & HF?

CB antenna's seem to mostly use 3/8-24 threads, not NMO.

    JUMPING IN HEAD FIRST

Keep in mind that on street bike, people tend to start small, then wish they bought a bigger bike. With adventure bike people tend to start big (1200 GS, etc) and later wish they had gone smaller. For many, the 690 enduro is an upgrade from the 1200GS. Of course if you spend 95% of your time...

    Quad Band APRS

The problem you will run into is most of the multi band radios (except those with built in APRS modems) have a limitation that makes using APRS simultaneously with voice problematic. Think of it this way: the 8900 is a quad band radio, but a dual channel radio, meaning you can tune slot A to...

Take a Land Cruiser to war?

Not TLC specifically, but the idea of a Toyota pickup as a troop carrier or with a gun mounted in the bed became so ubiquitous that it even had a war named after it: http://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Toyota_War

2015 Honda CRF1000 ADV Bike??? (maybe)

Perhaps, and the people I know do not constitute a wide sample set, but to a person, everyone I've talked to has hated the idea of the DCT and said they would never want a mc with an automatic. I don't know how successful Hondas other DCTs have been in the US compared to the manual models.

2015 Honda CRF1000 ADV Bike??? (maybe)

I don't know. Yes automatic cars outsell standards in the U.S. by huge margins, but almost all MC buyers are enthusiasts that have already crossed the learning curve. I've never once heard someone I know complain about having to shift.

2015 Honda CRF1000 ADV Bike??? (maybe)

Honda has been beating the automatic/DCT drum more than any other MC manufacturer. It makes sense for the scooter/commuter/beginner bikes, but if they don't offer a standard, I wonder how much that will turn off potential buyers?

A challenge to the "lead sled" ADV bikes offered today

This may be true, but there are a few things to keep in mind: 1) motorcycle buyers are overwhelmingly male. In the ADV bike market I suspect it is more pronounced. As a result motorcycle design overwhelmingly favors male taste and male physiology. Since men are on average taller than women...

A challenge to the "lead sled" ADV bikes offered today

It's a shame BMW only made it for a year. They kept going with the xcountry--I guess they didn't sell many xchallanges and xmotos.

A challenge to the "lead sled" ADV bikes offered today

It's all about the right tool for the job. I prefer my 640 on single track, and for really technical stuff, even that is too big. However if was riding to the Dempster and back, I'd probably prefer my GSA (1150). There is no perfect bike unless you only ride in one type of terrain. But if I...

A challenge to the "lead sled" ADV bikes offered today

I do think there are some gaps in the market, but no bike is perfect for all situations. Sometimes the big bike has a lot going for it over smaller bike. The smallest adv bike I have is a 640 adventure, but if I'm not stuck on single track, I'd much rather have my 950.

    iPhone 6 and 6 Plus

I'm sad. I have a iPhone 5S, and in my opinion it is already too big. The 3.5" screen on previous iPhones was perfect, but I really don't want to carry a 4.6" monstrosity. For now I'll be fine, but the 7 and 8 come out, and push the 5S and 5C out of production, will Apple keep a small phone...

    VHF...

Technically, it looks like that radio will do MURS frequencies (151,154) which are license free, but as stated it is overkill for that. The easiest thing is to spend $17 and half day of studying to get the tech license, then spend about $130 for the entry level 2m Kenwood (TM-281A). The...

    Questions on KLR and DR650

I knew that the dr could loose an inch and a half or so, by attaching the rear shock to a different point on the knuckle, and flipping something I the forks, and I was looking at something like that for my dad (5'5"). Thanks for the answer on the other stuff you did.
