How about a surplus HMMWV platform?

There seems to be a fair amount of confusion here, so let me see if I can help. The short answer is, it depends. Sometimes it depends on the state, for example Arizona wont register and plate a surplus humvee, end of story. I live in South Carolina where anything is street legal so as long as I...

How about a surplus HMMWV platform?

What do you guys think about picking up a surplus HMMWV from GovPlanet and turning into an expo rig? I was licensed to drive them back in the corps and I know how to do basic maintenance. I have also found sites that sell every conceivable part for these things, albeit kinda pricey, but the...

    1998 Dodge Sportsmobile - $3500

One thing to look for is the price. If a vehicle seems much cheaper than it should be, and that number is under $5k, then it is most likely a scam. Something about the FBI getting involved if it is over 5k. Too bad

Need a go anywhere SERVIC RIG?

This thing is pretty sweet and could be awesome. That second poster can stuff it. No reason to be an ******* here, especially when this rig is right at home here

Wow! Really clean little Trooper. It's not very often a seller has the owners manual AND the workshop manual! The workshop manuals are tough to find for these little guys. Great rig man! If you don't get any hits here, you should put it up on PlanetIsuzoo. They love to see nice first gens I...

Denver, CO Auction - (4) Ford E-350 Shuttle Buses - Quigley 4x4 Conversion

Interesting... Might have to put a bid in .. We'll see what happens! Do these vehicles have a reserve? I don't see it stated anywhere, but most on the page are going for under $5?! I'll have to read the site's terms & conditions for once (the horror!)

    Super Budget Expedition Vehicle?

I have a long wheel base '89 Trooper LS with a 5-speed and a 2.6L. So far I have gotten around 22-23 mpg, but I haven't driven it with economy in mind, so I could probably average a little better. Tomorrow I am putting Goodyear Wrangler M/Ts (245/75R16) on it with my new-to-me 16" snowflakes. So...

    Super Budget Expedition Vehicle?

Make sure you look into Isuzu Troopers. 1st gen are awesome, kinda quirky in a cool way, and can be found for dirt cheap. I bought an '89 with only 130k on the clock, it has the 5-speed 2.6L 4-cyl combo, and I have yet to find any rust. Only ended up paying about $1,100. With your budget, you...

    got a new trooper

Incredible! That's a classy little Trooper. As far as going back to stock, aside from the seat, all you need is some snowflakes. Those would have had the 15" ones, but the 16" ones look great on my '89 Glad to see there are still a few this nice out there floating around.

What is "needed" for an Overland Vehicle

Honestly, the more I read about the travels people embark on, all you really 'need' per se, is a sense of adventure, and a horizon to persue. The rest is extra. If you are traveling by vehicle, I still stand by my brakes comment.

What is "needed" for an Overland Vehicle

Brakes. Good, working, quality brakes. Everything else kind of depends, I guess. I would say 4WD, but I've read about a Porsche 944 going all over Africa, and there is also every adventure motorcyclist on this forum that would disagree. Also water. That's important.

Democratic Republic of Congo: Lubumbashi to Kinshasa

Incredible. Simply incredible. I stumbled across this thread on mistake, and before I knew it, I was 40 pages deep and a couple hours had flown by. What a tale. As for the wrap up and dealing with people's opinions... I'll say this much: I think both you displayed incredible amounts of...
