    *RickRunner* - Rickashay's 05 T4R

Hey Addison, finally had a chance to go through your build thread! I was chatting with Chase on the ferry a couple weeks ago - we should all do a beer or two soon.

Hodakaguy's Overland Tacoma Builds - On to new adventures!

I am now without Hodaka, but I still have an original beer mug! The Combat Wombat found a new home earlier this year, after 40 something years in the family.

    06-09 Forester or 03-06 Montero

I have to say, as much as I love my Subarus, I would be leaning to the Montero if I were in your shoes.

    06-09 Forester or 03-06 Montero

Well, your budget for repairs/upgrades seems to favour the Subaru. You can do heavy-duty springs to better handle loads, a small lift (2”), tires and whatever else you want - assuming it does not need anything else major. That gets you into a car that gets decent fuel economy, has lots of...

    06-09 Forester or 03-06 Montero

Main concern would probably be local parts/repair support, but also how much of a load you plan to have onboard regularly. In either case, and I might be wrong, but $5k doesn't seem like much of a budget for either of those two once you figure in the items you will want to change out/add. Tires...

    Subaru Forest Questions

Depending on the year of 4runner, look out for head gasket, transmission, and axle/diff issues. If you're looking at new, of course, warranty negates it. Except for down time.

Subaru owners: Let's see your expedition rigs!

I paid $145 ea for mine - how is that extreme? There are alternatives out there, but these were designed specifically for use on Subarus. Also, the 15” allows me to use a 225/70-15 instead of a 215/65-16, which gives me basically 1” more sidewall, only a slight increase in overall...

    How good are Subarus?

I've seen 4” and bigger on a Forester and Outback, and 30” and bigger tires. Yah, it's more work, but it's doable if that's what you're into. I might be mistaken, but I'm pretty sure fitting 34” tires to a Taco requires a lot of work, and that's an equivalent size increase. I...

Latest experiment.... 1988 Subaru justy 4x4!!

May I ask who you were going to get the lift from? PM me if you prefer - I have lots of contacts in the subaru lift crowd, and might be able to vouch for them if it makes a difference.

Subaru owners: Let's see your expedition rigs!

End links might be doing that. Lifted? SG seems to be more sensitive to end links when you lift it, mine is not lifted yet and I have already had issues. I completely removed rear sway bar to help :)

    Subaru shopping questions

I personally know many people who have had to do head gaskets on Toyotas. When shopping for a car for my daughter, we looked at a Honda, and found out that certain years had major transmission problems, and head gasket issues. I used to work at a Honda dealership, and very few of the mechanics...

    Subaru shopping questions

I've owned several Subarus without having head gasket issues, including a 97 2.5l. Shop for a car with a good service history. Good call on staying away from Toyotas and Hondas, they tend to get neglected because people think they will run forever without servicing. Lots of head gasket...

Should I buy a higher mileage Honda Element?

There's a bit more to the regular maintenance then that, but maintenance is the key - as with pretty much any vehicle.

'98 Subaru Forester in the High Desert

A mechanic friend of mine drives a highly modified Ford Raptor, a massive tube "buggy" based on a 70's or 80's RAM, and a Ramcharger that is jacked up and rides on the requisite big tires. Every time I tell him about my latest adventure in my Outback, he says 'I can't believe you wheel a...
