International has developed a couple of prototypes for consideration by the military. Vehicles like these will be appearing as military surplus in 15 years!

The first is an entry in the Joint Light Tactical Vehicle competition, to choose a replacement for the HumVee.

International has partnered with BAE Systems to build this prototype. Other companies in the competition are Lockheed Martin, Northrop Grumman + Oshkosh, Force Protection + DRS, Textron + Boeing + SAIC + Ford, and General Dynamics Land Systems + AM General.

The military will narrow the field to three entries in June. The final selection process will take an additional 2 years. The prize is a contract to replace 200,000 HumVees, for a total of $20 billion over 10 years.

A second interesting prototype from Navistar is the Future Tactical Truck System (FTTS).

The FTTS prototype features a cab for two and a long cargo bed with a 6,000 lb payload. The truck is a hybrid, using a 3.0L diesel 4 cylinder engine (330 lb-ft of torque) made in International's Brasilian plant, plus a powerful electric motor (an additional 245 lb-ft). The space under the truck bed gives lots of room for batteries.

The 18 ft long truck has 4 wheel steering, making it extremely maneuverable. The FTTS also has 14 inches of ground clearance, thanks to its tall tires.

The FTTS would make a great platform for all sorts of utility applications, including use as a camper chassis. Read more and view a video about the FTTS here
