98 defender blowing lots of black smoke

Hi all,

I've just bought a 98 defender 110 2.5 tdi. Ive just put in a refurbished turbo and intercooler in amid lots of other undercarriage work. She is blowing a lot of black smoke at higher speed (5th gear especially, over 50mph).

I didn't get a chance to drive her at all really before the turbo fix so not sure if that was the cause. Air filter is good, hoses seem good. What's my next step? Injectors and fuel pump? Might be out of my depth there. Is it a bad idea to continue driving? Till I can visit a landy specialist? (400km away)

Thanks in advance
Eddy

Black smoke is often an indication of excessive fuel.
That can also cause excessive piston temperatures, so needs checking and fixing.
I suggest that an exhaust gas temperature monitor is worthwhile.

thanks everyone for the responses. turns out it was some loose bolts on the intake manifold (gasket was just changed) = lack of boost from the turbo = excess fuel.

lesson learned- if you've just had work done when a problem arises, check that work first!
