AmbuLand build thread

OI wish I had a better update to post but I have more excuses than time these days!

Anyhow, I got around to removing that annoying wall separating the front cab to the box and wow, what a change! I can now picture how much room I have for this project. Enough that I decided to incorporate an interior shower.

I was also able to check the floor thickness, almost 1 1/2" of plywood! I'm now tempted to replace it with a 1/2" plywood to gain more headroom or at least better insulate the ceiling... I'm thinking of adding a 1/2" layer of close cell foam between the 2" insulation and the aluminum cross members. I'm afraid direct ceiling contact to the x-members will result in condensation in cold climate.

Anyway, couple pictures showing the man cave...

Looking good. Are you going to add rooftop AC? I'm wondering if any of the compartments on the exterior are large enough to fit a 3000 watt generator?

Roof AC might work for most but here in Vancouver BC it's a very temperate climate, nothing to justify AC for me. Plus with the 2" insulation with white roof it's actually pretty cool inside. At best I'll install a Fantastic roof fan and along with front AC and windows I'll be a happy camper.

As for storage I bet it would fit in the side compartment.

I deleted my post here since I asked it as its own topic.
Sorry if I first asked it in your thread

Thanks Rick.

All my previous builds were done pretty quick and I often had to redesign my set up after a few trips.

This build is way slower as I'm also renovating a heritage house at the same time. Hopefully it will result in having more time to figure it right the first time! Lol

Mr D - I just brought home my new rig and started some demo work. I already have a growing list of questions for you seasoned ambulance remodelers.

Wow, that was quick!!! Congrats :)

Demolition is fun but it's good to have an idea of how you want to proceed. Most keep the original cabinets as it's easy and they are good quality. And some of us strip it down so we don't get limiting factors on how we want to build the interior... Now that mine is gutted it's easier to lay a floor plan, run wires, plumbing...

Post some pictures and tell us some more about what you got!

Half of the cabinets were already gone, and I removed more of them last night. The only section that is staying is right behind the drivers seat. I will start my new build thread shortly so I don't jack yours.

ya...my circuit board makes me want to shart my drawers! I'm totally scared of it! Anywho...new to the whole site so not sure how this works. Bought an ambulance this last week. Definitely want a shower!!!! I'm scared of gutting it! But I kinda want to take out a cabinet on drivers back...but there is an outside storage box I would have to cut into also. But I want to do that...add a makeshift floor...put grey water tank under it...and install maybe a cassette type toilet shower combo.

Seems like that Ambo thing is contagious! Congrats on your new toy and make sure to start a thread with some pictures!

I hear you on how you want to go ahead with your build. The electrical can be quite scary but it's usually well done and easy enough to figure. If you're not comfy playing with this then it's time to get some sparky friends to help you out. Might as well do it right the first time!

At first I was thinking of reusing as much of the original electrical circuits as possible. Now that I started cleaning it up I'm thinking to remove as much as needed and relocate out of the way (top corner/ceiling).

Since my wife has me slaving on house reno's and have hardly anytime for the AmbuLand I decided to spoil myself a little ;)

It took me a while to find one within driving distance but it's finally in my shop. Bought this Autohome Airtop from an old fellow in Portland who only used it for 7 days before putting it for sale. At first I was looking for a white one (for cooling effect) but I figure this one was like new and the color shouldn't be an issue here in Canada. Plus I'm now thinking it will actually look better than white once mounted on the roof.

The plan is to permanently glue the RTT on the top and cut an opening in the ambo roof/tent's floor, similar to a Westy. It will be great for additional headroom, great ventilation in the summer plus sleeping pad for the kids. I was specifically looking for an Airtop as there's no crank involved, just gas struts that pops up so I'll be able to easily open it from the inside.

In the mean time I'll mount it on my Patrol and make good use of it until I'm further ahead with this project.

My wife mentioned wanting to visit the East Coast next summer or so, that got me thinking of a visit to Chris shop instead of shipping all the parts this way ;) food for thought!
