Bear Grylls Survival Series Fire Starter

I am a fan of Bear's survival show, and I had posted in the knife thread about the new Gerber line that has his name on them.

Amazon emailed this fire starter link to me earlier in the week.
Bear Grylls Survival Series Fire Starter

I have a few of those fire starter rods now that you simply take a pocket knife and scrape over them, and I have another one that came with a cool knife my oldest son got me last year, but I like this new Gerber one as it has storage in it for tinder.

There are a few videos at the URL above too, placing my order for it in a few minutes.
The Amazon reviews are very positive on this new fire starter tool.

Can't say I'd rush out and buy something with a dude's logo or whatever plastered all over it, but if you're happy with the way it works...

That is all that counts.
I like the fact that it has the tinder supply with it, no need to carry the cotton balls in a separate baggie or jar like some do.

Some complained the lanyard was to short for the neck, why would you hang this from your neck?
It is made to throw/hang in a hiking/hydration pack or to keep in your camping supplies, not to hang from around your neck.
It does not have the proper "breakaway" safety feature like a true neck lanyard has like we wear for our badges at work.

Looks similar to the old Gerber Strike Force. I've got a couple of these and they work pretty good. The tinder can also be lit with a match and burns when wet.

Here is a pic of two very old fire starters I got around twenty years ago or so.
Very simple ones, one with a wood handle, the other one with wood too with a hole for a lanyard or chain.

Also seen is the one that came with a Tops Knives Hoffman Harpoon 01 knife my oldest son got for me for Christmas of 2009.
Tops Knives are very popular with our service men and women, my son found out about the brand on one of his three tours of Iraq.

The fire starter that came with the Hoffman Harpoon has three rods.
The two silver ones are made out of magnesium.
You use a knife or the GI can opener to scrape off some shavings and add it to your tinder.
The shavings burn at 5,000 °.
The dark colored rod is the one that makes the 1,000 ° spark when you scrape a knife over it.
