I'm pretty sure that forum member Metcalf's product is made in the USD as well but I'd let him confirm:

Be careful with using homemade soft shackles. The stopper knot should be tensioned with the right tool.

Meh, it’s like anything else. If you do it wrong. Splicing and rope work is fun and satisfying. Rope work is an ancient craft going back centuries. Probably since humans first needed to tie up their dog or set a snare lol.

there are several knots you can tie, button knot, diamond knot, even an overhand knot. Www.knotsbygrog is a great resource.

your post actually mentions pliers to finish dressing the knot. These high modulus ropes are very strong but their weak point is ‘picking’; they are vulnerable to chaffing. Steel cable is much more durable, but it too can be dangerous if used wrong.
thus using pliers can pick the fibers. That’s not good.
Some people use a winch to do the final tightening, some use a high lift jack, or simply use it for a recovery and it will tighten itself.
some people buy an expensive set of fids, while others use big knitting needles or tie even a wire onto the end.

to say only buy them and not make them because home made ones are faulty, is like saying that self sufficiency is a bad thing, and it is impossible for a person to make their own and make them properly.
Your post was written by a company that wants to sell their product. Nothing wrong with that. Nothing wrong with making your own. To each their own.

Personally I much rather buy it made and nicely packaged. From a stand point of buying USA made rope, the protective sleeves and the time to make the shackles you would be over in cost/time to any of those prices stated by any of those manufactures above. Unless you are buying spools of rope and materials direct from the manufactures to make them.

Perhaps you may be under in cost by building your own if using imported materials. The only problem is that imported materials are often not tested to WLL standards. Personally I would not take a chance, from a safety point of view.

I don’t know how you are getting that price, unless you are buying a spool. The Ultrex is a pricey rope.

cheapest I found was like $5.00 per foot.

Can you share a link of the place you buy from?!

What I did was to call and ask for scrap pieces. they sold me two random hanks.
even if you buy full retail, ( thx exploring the outdoors for the link),
The prices you posted are still are waay below the final cost of a premade ‘official’ shackle, which was my point in response to TO_Socal

I can't see that you would save money by making your own soft shackles based on numbers.

Let's say we pay a wholesale price of $6.27 per foot on the Ultrex by Yale at 5/8 size.

Estimating the cost only:

$6.27 x 20 feet

= $125.40
Shipping $6.99
Total = $132.39 (plus tax if applicable)

Chafe guard
$1.50 per foot
$1.50 x 20feet
= $30.00 plus tax
Shipping $6.99
= $36.99

You would be at $162.39, Plus the time you spent making 1, 2, 3 shackles etc. Whatever you would pay yourself to complete 1.

1 soft shackle costs $50 to about $85.00 depending on the brand.

So I guess you would spend more money in the beginning, but you would have extra rope for the future. I can see your point :)
