Coming attraction: 3 row crossovers

Looks like the next big thing from the auto manufacturers will be XXL crossovers with 3 rows. Subaru is showing the Viziv-7 concept, VW has the Atlas coming, and Jeep plans a stretched Grand Cherokee.

Dimensionally, the three row crossovers are about the same size as a Honda minivan, but with a jacked up part time 4x4 drivetrain.

The bestselling 2017 Honda Pilot and Toyota Highlander are shorter, and have three rows of seats. But the third row is useful only for kids, and there is very little luggage space when the third row is occupied.

Thes new vehicles have unibody construction and independent suspension, so they're lighter than a similar size body on frame truck like the Chevy Tahoe or Ford Expedition. The Chevrolet Traverse is the better example, just about the same size and construction as these new super-sized crossovers.

Like other crossovers, these new vehicles are most likely to be best suited for secure travel on bad roads and bad weather, and not for rock hopping up a dry river bed.

I have a 2015 highlander, it's awesome. The third row is okay for adults actually. Great motor and tranny, highly recommend
