Met this guy in Dakar 1997...

He put the same bike as I was riding on 4 wheels! No idea if he made it to the finish line but it sure was a marvel at the start.

Wow, that's pretty amazing. I'm always curious why the 4 wheelers don't do better in the Dakar. Seems like the perfect platform. Small and light like a bike, but 4 wheels should be easier in the sand?

I think they are way more difficult to ride than a motorbike. For one thing, they are not wide enough to fit into the car/truck tracks and therefore are always bouncing from left to right. And if you bottom that thing out, you have a hell of a time to dig those heavy suckers out of the sand/mud.
