Deciding between Webasto and Espar for heat and hot water and where to mount it

I've also read many times to get one size down for what you think may be needed so its running harder to prevent soot build up, which makes perfect sense

What unit are you running Neil? Our Webasto ran trouble free and put out great heat up to 4500m above 5000m sometimes it would not fire up and I had to reset it. Once it fired it put out heat, smoke on start up only.

Hi Joe

We have the 10kw Eberspacher M2 with built in altitude compensation.

It always worked , even at the high altitude.

It has a variable output setting, the lowest being below 1 kw, the highest being 10 kw.

At above 5000m it ran quite happily at about 25 % being 2.5 kw.

If I cranked it up above it went into shut down.

2.5 kw was plenty for us. Heating the cabin could be done on 500 w , however pre heating the engine ( we were minus 25 ) really needed the full 2.5 kw. ( I have no glow plugs so without pre heat I am stuck)

What I am trying to point out is that if in these conditions 25 % is fine then its great.

I think if we had chosen a lower output model it might have been an issue.

We met travellers with both Eberspachrr and Webasto units that would never go over 3500m because their units wouldn't fire up.

We also met travellers who had no issues at that height.

Diesel quality also effects it. Bolivian was the worst.

Cheers

Neil
