New Zealander Sir Edmund Hillary and Nepal's Tenzing Norgay were the first climbers confirmed to have reached the summit of Chomolungma (aka Mt Everest), the world's tallest mountain. Later, Hillary became the first person to have stood at both poles as well as the top of the tallest mountain.
