I'm really digging that Trollhole top on Superbuickguys rig. Think that might be a future purchase down the road. There's an aftermarket bow set sold off SOR's website for about $1550 so about $3000 by the time it's all said an done with. @Superbuickguy, did you go with the SOR bows or did you have the OEM ones? I'm wondering if there's any height difference when compared to the original hard top. My 40 just barely clears the garage door with the height it's currently at. @AdventureYeti, That's is an awesome 40 love the stance and color. Mine was originally that color when we first picked it up. Ended up going with a different color due to the amount of body repair that was needed.

I bought stock rails from a local salvage yard (was quite fortunate there). I can't imagine there's any difference in height, but mine isn't stock. And yes, 3k is about the going price - rebuild a hardtop with paint and rivets, and you're not far off that soft-top price.

Surprised I missed this thread before!

1974 FJ40 with a '78 2F running headers and GM TBI. H41 four speed mated to a Warden's billet transfer case.

Four wheel discs (60 Series in front, Monte Carlo swap in rear) 4.10 gears and dual auto lockers in the axles. Rolling on Super Swamper TSLs.

Wheelbase is at 100 inches, with both axles pushed out. Mix n' match OME 40 Series leafs up front, flipped and drilled OME 60 Series leafs out back.

Rear 2/3rds body tub is from a 1968 FJ40, front tube fenders, and full roll cage attached to the frame.

Saginaw PS swap, Camero bucket seats, aftermarket skid plate, homemade rear swing-away tire carrier, Superwinch X-9 winch, CB and 2M radios, etc. etc.

I bought the rig in late 1997 in stock/beat condition. It has been a great vehicle to learn mechanics and modifications on. I have been using it as a extreme trail rig and drive around the neighborhood in the summer rig.

1978 HJ45 Ute:
Bought as a project late last year, and put on the road within a month:
Gumtree Pic 1.JPG

Removed the gate and 33x12.5 tyres, fixed a few bits and pieces up and it was on the road, where it has got put to use as a daily driver and workhorse.

Getting used as a workhorse for firewood runs, but will be set up for touring as time and money allows.

8. Link to your build thread:

I came across it in Uganda. Paid next to nothing for it. Found a couple of backpacker students up there to drive it all the way back to SA for me.
Needs a little TLC but mechanically sound.

Slow conversion to a tourer has suddenly gained more speed after keeping an eye out for stuff in a 300km radius of home.

Long way with no heater, radio or passenger... 5minutes short of 10hrs door to door in the Land Cruiser...
517654

Didn't do too badly really though for a 1978 HJ45.

Now, that journey was so I could get all this "stuff":
1) an aluminum kit tray from a Hilux space cab:
517656

2) a canvas canopy from a Land Cruiser single cab:
517657

3) Hillbilly loaded on the ute to come home with it all (150km)
517658

4) Lobbed together whilst I sort out the mounts:
517659

So, it all fitted on the ground...

5) and it all fitted on ute (as well as some "new" wheels and tyres)
517660

Should be all mounted up properly by the end of the weekend, which will be great - normal timescale for me, get it done in the 2 weekends that my wife is working in a month... and we'll be away in it the next weekend she has off.
