Fuel Mileage 8.1 Litre Chevrolet

Just returned from a 1,000+ mile trip in the 2001 Chevrolet Express 3500 Quigley 4WD Bomber Van with the 8.1 litre engine. 75% Interstate running 72 MPH with the cruise control 25% Alabama 2 lane backroads all the while averaging a solid 13.5 MPG for the entire trip.

Not bad at all if do say so myself!

If you can keep your foot out of it they are surprising good, if however, you feel like you need to keep up with the diesel rigs on grades you will be in the 2mpg range and watching the coolant gauge rise as fast as the fuel gauge falls...they are great motors, and if you got one in the early 2000's trucks with the allison behind them a great overall pairing. I'm real curious about what the new 6.6L direct injected GM gas big block can do..

A buddy of mine has a crewcab with the 8.1 in it. He put a Vortec on it with a mild tune and picked up about 1.5MPG all around. Due to his driving style, it was a pretty impressive gain.
