This is a rad thread. Thanks for taking the time to post up. I would vote for a piano hinge too, maybe some of the rear door hinges from the tear drop trailer market would make a good candidate?

Wow, yes great thread thank you for sharing. I bet that got the adrenaline going, scary. Really happy to hear it didn't burn more. I'm sure it could have been much worse. Getting some great ideas from this. and I second the excitement on this already is very good.

Thanks, 1 step forward 2 back, but if we work hard this weekend we'll be back to where we were a couple weeks ago. Haha!
Looking into a few different ones. A beefy piano hinge is on the way from McMaster Carr. We'll see if it fits the bill. Priority 1 is that this thing never fails, #2 is that it looks good.

Thanks man, me too. We caught it in time. Kelsey removed the headliner and melted insulation and already had it back in. I cut off a few pieces we welded on to align the new hinge. Gotta love the aluminum dust!

Another long weekend trying to recover from the fire and get some new things done. Kelsey is working on sewing a new section to replace the burned portion of the tent. We also put on a stainless steel heavy duty piano hinge.

Fun work in the rain.

We've decided against welding anymore on the top if we can avoid it. So, JB Weld to fill the old hinge holes and Sikaflex to help mount the hinge and give it more weather proofing.

We used some good cool coating on the roof to keep us from baking while sleeping in late.

Sure, the roof coating could be a horrible idea, but we'll see. We may leave it white so it works properly, but if it's unbearable to look at we may paint it and just hope the 22MM thickness does a decent job with heat.

Well, I spent a week playing with Land Cruisers and Land Rover's that weren't mine, but this weekend we were back on Goose trying to make progress.
Wired in the Ctek dual battery system. (I HATE WIRING)
Wired in some USB and 12v charge ports, the compressor, fridge, lights and a fuse block in back of the truck as well. We got the headliner back in, post fire, and the tent.
Kelsey did a great job sewing in a new section of tent. All looks as it should!

The playing was actually hard work, but it was still fun. We did 600 something miles of offroad training over 6 days with some Special Operations folks. Countless breakdowns, water crossings, some field welding and even driving through the night with NODS one evening. Long days, but I've never taught to a smarter or more receptive group of folks.
Also, if you have the means, I highly recommend night driving with white phosphorus PVS-31's. (I do not have these means despite a brother who works at a night vision company offering them at cost. Holy $$!!)

Thanks Dennis!

Midweek progress:
Kelsey made a mounting plate for the ARB compressor.
I used some conductive epoxy to fix a wire on the compressor that ripped apart...
We mounted up the inverter as well.
We also painted the top with Steel-it.

Curious how you guys will like the Steel-It. Seems like tons of folks in the off road racing world use it and like it. I'm interested in the long-term durability of it. You two will probably be good canaries in the mineshaft to test that.

Agreed, I hope it holds up. It did cut the glare of the bare aluminum which was one thing I wanted. I went with it after looking at the arms on the 1600 car after a few races and it was still holding up despite the sand blasting those parts get. On a buddies car the only spot it was bare metal was where he rolled it. It seems to rub off rather than flake. Interesting stuff!

Lookin good man. Did you get the hinge fasteners sorted? I had some aviation ideas that might be worth considering if you still need a solution.

Thanks man, I think we got it sorted with a heavy duty piano hinge, but I'll be watching it like a hawk and trying to abuse it for the first few trips just to make sure I trust it. I'm down to grab a beer and hear those aviation ideas though! I'd like to have a backup plan in place.
