Found a 2003 Montero on CL for $2,000! Had 235K miles with a blown head gasket and warped valve covers. Thanks to Kevin Jensen of Route 66 Fabwerks in Flagstaff http://flagstaffcustomfabrication.com/
Lawerence has been resurrected with a donor motor with 88k miles. I had no idea of the history of this Montero, until after purchase. Lawerence will remain in AZ and looking forward to new adventures!

It lives to see another trail! Happy to answer any questions, though she's been through a couple of builders since my original acquisition.

Hey, that's great! Glad you got it up and running. I used to own it too and am living in Flagstaff now as well. Are you in Flagstaff too, or another part of AZ?

Right on! I’m living in Havasu but back and forth to Flagstaff. Lawerence is running great, but popped a couple codes a few weeks ago driving up to Flagstaff : PO303 and PO431
Floorboard behind the driver seat was hot, so I wrapped the exhaust pipe. With the engine swap, I replaced the head gasket, wires &plugs, O2 sensors, and been running 92 octane with a couple treatments of sea foam. Cleared the codes and CEL hasn't come back on since. Still driving smooth!
Any ideas? This summer, I’m planning on giving it a fresh coat of black rhino liner, then color matching the rest of the body. Hoping to take it out on some trail rides and road trips soon!

Hot floorboard - that's from the replacement muffler being tucked up higher than the original one and without a heat shield. I only figured this out when I did the same mod to my next Gen3 and the floormat started melting. I made a custom heat shield as detailed in the Yoshi build thread but there are universal ones on Amazon that wrap around the body of the muffler that would be way easier.

As for the codes - if they come back, smoke test the intake and exhaust systems, likely a vacuum leak.
