Modding a RTT to close 'thicker' to swallow more bedding??????

I have searched a bit, and found nothing usefull...

has anyone played around with making taller hinge bases, and presumably shortening the tent poles in a folding tent to make it close with an extra inch or inch and a half inside the closed tent? the cover on my 23 zero could easily take the extra height when folded. the 'open' side is always a good 2 inches tallerr than the hinge side when we are on the move, because of bedding left inside. I figure if the hinge side closed a little bigger, it would just be less finicky to pack up loaded with blankets and sheets.

my thought is to make new brackets, or maybe even just a 1/2 to 3/4 inch spacer. Not too keen on shortening the poles as an experiment though....

I feel the same way towards the FWC's. If the company would raise the ceiling up 5 -6" underbed storage would be enabled and the condensation issue under the mattress might be remedied with the dead air space. I'm not a sleeping bag anymore and the made up bed is a plus.

It wouldn’t be hard to do if you had a tubing bender and a simple brake.

I did shorten the poles on one of my Tepui tents because I felt like the fabric was pulling too tight.

If I did it again I would probably bend new hoops too.

I added ‘shims’ today.... lifting the hinges 5/8ths on each side. It was a measurement of convenience, two small slabs of cutting board per bracket mount, that gave me a little more than an inch of extra closure space. The tent opens and closes without much describable change in fabric tension. There is almost an inch and a quarter of extra blanket space when closed now.... I may shorten the poles but I’m not sure it’s worth the trouble.

pics to follow....

The next step, I suppose, would be to recreate taller hinges. Not a technically difficult task, but also possibly not worth the effort. Hopefully road test the shim solution this coming weekend.

How did this work out for you? I have had customers asking to put additional straps on the other end to force close extra bedding, but I've tried to discourage that because I thought it would put additional stress on the hinge mounts. So your spacing idea is interesting, especially if it did not stress the tent fabric.

I am going to trim the poles to relieve tension on the tent fabric when open, and I would like to fab up taller hinges, perhaps with dual sides, down the road, but the extra storage space proved valuable last trip, the rif was much more easily packed with all the bedding inside(less pillows).
