Mounting radios in the 40?

OK, so now when I get the 2 m radio, I want to move both it and the CB up out of the way...it'll be too crowded down low.
Has anyone used an upper shelf in either an FJ40, or something similar, to mount radios?

Something like this: CCOT Shelf (see below left)

Or an arrangement like Steve Curren's (no photos) where he has a bar running forward from a rear roll bar to a front roll bar, in the centerline (Hope that makes sense) with radios on that. Something like below right...

What are the pros and cons?

Gracias!

Tuffy

Ed-

I would go with a Tuffy... I know that RMC uses Tuffy on their show vehicle.

Seems nice to me...

  • 16-gauge steel security console
  • (2) separate lockable compartments for mounting a stereo, CB Radio, Speaker, or other electronic equipment
  • Compartments swing up flush with enclosure when shut.
  • expandable to fit between a roll bar and windshield
  • Will fit in a space measuring larger than 32-1/2" and less than 36-1/2" between the two mounting points.

I would make sure it fits first though...

We have a custom bar running from the rear roll bar to the windshield with a CB hanging from it - ( similar to what you mentioned) every-once in a while we bang out heads when getting in quick ( why I don't know :) but it is nice to look up at the CB and also hear the speaker ( which is comes from the bottom of the unit)

other than that - there would be room in our Tuffy center console too
