My Journey

Greg.....your last line.....exactly.....

Furbucket.....I'm still in the market and that experience taught me precisely what my price point is.....

Vintageracer.....life goes on.....

JD.....I had to Google Gravely Range Road and that looks like an outstanding ride. I actually looked at cabins near Ennis and Virginia City. The Madison River is one of my favorites and your timing should be perfect. Hoping you write up a trip report.....

Tgil.....thanks.....

ITTOG.....the fondest days of my long life were when I raised my two sons. Travel is an amazing experience but the relationships I had with my sons could never be surpassed by anything.....

Ace.....the mortgage payment is not for me.....

And so it is that I've left the drama behind but my search for a cabin will not end......

We left Gallatin Valley behind and we drove west.....we reached the Continental Divide and camped up high as the temperatures here in western Montana are hovering around ninety. The following day we descended from the mountain pass and continued west. The highway runs parallel to the Clark Fork and as you may have guessed we soon stopped for a refreshing dip in the cool clear river waters.....

My guess is that the cool nighttime temperatures are causing the fall color changes to the riverside plants.....or maybe the plants are just tired as we approach the end of the summer season and are preparing themselves for the long winter season.....

The dogs found a great mud hole to lounge in.....

View attachment 536602

I met a group of young people that told me about some hot springs nearby but by the end of our conversation it was revealed that they were really warm springs.....which was fine by me. The dogs and I.....we hiked about 15 minutes and approached the warm springs.....

View attachment 536604

I found the water here to be cool at best but now that those daily hot showers are not a part of my life I enjoy what I'm given.....and really how could I complain about this.....

View attachment 536605

We drove into the national forest and found the perfect spot up a canyon along a rambling brook.....

View attachment 536606

We ended another day in Montana as we often do while on the road.....we took a hike up a steep mountainside to take in the views of a setting sun.....

We would continue west.....

I spent many hours at Nimrod swimming when I was younger. definitely not hot or even really warm. There used to be some good size bass i there. If you swim under the rock you come up in a cave. Used to feak people out if they did not know about it as you would jump in swim under and disappear.

Happy to do so, The Gordon Jensen, was built in 1947 for the navy as a damage repair ship. Eventually she made her way into a fish processing vessel. About 320ft long, ish.

When she was with the navy USS Zeus

We move folks from vessel to vessel in this man basket cage,

Currently have a tramper ( Poohah #2 ) married to out port side for the month. Although the way product is coming in, it may be quicker as its slow. She would be on the left from the bridge view. as we are anchored in the current bay. True, not much is here. Port Moller is about 4 water miles away, but has a peter pan plant closed down, and an airstrip.

The Gordon in Dutch Harbor when they picked me up.

Tgil.....I've enjoyed posting and it's great that you enjoy reading this stuff.....

Foy.....obviously jadmt found the correct property. Yesterday (thru my agent) I received a letter from the sellers with a brief history of the cabin.....most amazing story. The woman speaks about her grandfather vacationing at the nearby hot springs nearly a century ago and building this log cabin in the mid 40's. She grew up visiting the place and eventually inherited it. Now decades have passed and it's her time to let it go. Unfortunate it has the issues that make it such a huge risk.....

jadmt.....you're correct on both counts. I'm assuming that you are from Missoula ? I couldn't recall the name of the springs when I posted but it was definitely Nimrod. I've seen the waterfall numerous times from the highway, actually have camped nearby, have swam in the river upstream, but had never stopped at the waterfalls until now. I sure wished they were steaming hot ! (it's now been 10 days since I've showered).....

PNWY.....that's cool stuff that you're into now and I get that whole thing about getting home. I'm missing that part of travel.....getting home.....

We left Missoula driving west on the interstate and then drove north up Highway 93. I had a destination in my mind but that destination will be further along since this thought passed through my mind that I was near the Garden of One Thousand Buddhas. Well I had enjoyed this place in the past so I made a U-turn and eventually pulled into their gravel lot.....

This is a really chill place to hang out and so it was that I would spend three days visiting this site. You might wonder how I could spend so much time here.....I wondered the same.....

Two activities that I thoroughly enjoy these days are walking / hiking and of course relaxing with that good book. With Yukons declining health that's coming with her old age (she's now eleven and one half), the flat valley roads were the ideal place for her to get out and exercise. Dogs are not allowed at the garden but we definitely got some miles in on the surrounding roads.....

On Sunday there was an event at the gardens which I somewhat attended.....it was the 15th Annual Peace Festival and it drew a really huge crowd.....

I had looked forward to attending the festival but the crowds were definitely a deterrent so I barely attended any of the events.....and that was fine by me.....

I also have friends in the area so I needed to make time to reconnect for a brief visit.....and that would come next.....

I think I remember an earlier post. This has caught my attention and I need to see how close I will be when I cross back into Montana on Hwy. 12.ight just have to detour a bit and check it out. jd

We made a stop at the canal for a long walk & a swim before leaving Yuma. Montana just loves to gather rocks from the river and lake beds.....

Now, THAT, is a rock! My first golden played with rocks from the driveway, the largest would've been smaller than a tennis ball. I was constantly taking them from her. Found her dead in the yard one day at 7 yo. I have always assumed she choked on one of those rocks.

JD.....bring a warm coat as we had the first snow of the season a few days ago. The Garden of One Thousand Buddhas is fairly interesting if you're into that kind of thing.....

Tgil.....that picture brings back fond memories of the dog I'll never forget.....thanks.....

Now we continued driving north and our next stop would be our nearly annual visit with the family that I purchased Yukon from over eleven years ago now. I'd be lying if I didn't say that this has become one of my favorite days of the year.....I've come to love these people and truly respect their simple ways in life.....

20190907_102443-1600x778.jpg

I never give these folks fair warning so my visits are always unexpected.....as I pulled into town and saw the wife walking along the road we were both quite surprised. Shortly thereafter the husband arrived and we reconnected along the side of the roadway. They were on their way out of town but they delayed their departure and invited me to their home.....

20190907_111335-1600x778.jpg

Our visit was fairly brief since they had plans to leave town.....I felt so fortunate to have caught them as I did.....and was so grateful for their hospitality.....

20190907_111239-1600x778.jpg

They loaded me up with fresh vegetables from their simply amazing garden.....all organic veggies of course.....

20190907_111324-1600x778.jpg

I had to stop him from filling that bag.....I'm just one old guy.....but I do love my fresh vegetables.....

20190907_124421-1600x778.jpg

As you know I've been on the hunt for a place to hunker down so they introduced me to a friend that builds log cabins.....

20190907_114233-1600x778.jpg

Unfortunately his plate was full as he already has three cabins to build. From the looks of his place I think it's easy to see why people seek him out.....

20190907_114447-1600x778.jpg

We took a drive over to see the farm where Yukon was born. Sometimes in the past I've thought that she has remembered the barn but this time there was no reaction.....

20190907_110025-1600x778.jpg

I think if there was a Shangri-la in North America that the Mission Valley could possibly be it. I just love this valley and the mountains that surround it.....

20190907_105942-1600x778.jpg

That afternoon I received a text from Tanner's family in Idaho with this picture attached. It's kind of funny how I buy a puppy and seem to make good friends in the process. Maybe I just get along best with the dog people.....

ITTOG.....nope, not one bit.....

JD.....just can't go wrong with a retriever. Hoping you a have an excellent vacation.....

Nautadoc.....and what a wonderful post ! Thanks.....

Arjan.....honestly I love that post.....that one just makes me feel good.....

There's definitely a new feel to the air here in northwest Montana. As I mentioned in an earlier post the first snows of the season recently fell from the skies.....

20190910_075737-2469x1200.jpg

When I began driving west a few weeks ago I had a plan in my head as to where I'd be in two weeks.....as do many of my plans, that plan never materialized. We are not even close to where I thought we would be. We've kind of just been treading water between Mission Valley and the city of Missoula, Montana. We've hung out in a nice little cemetery appropriately named Pleasant View Cemetery.....

20190911_163214-1600x778.jpg

I find cemeteries to be quite interesting.....this particular headstone certainly filled the description of being "interesting".....

20190911_163422-1600x778.jpg

And these two headstones tell a tragic story. I can't even begin to imagine the pain that these parents lived through as they buried two of their children, one having lived such a brief life.....

20190911_100723-1200x2469.jpg

20190911_100713-1200x2469.jpg

I guess nothing could exemplify more how unfair life really is when you see the nearby headstone of someone who lived for nearly one hundred years.....

20190911_101230-1600x778.jpg

A Montana Pioneer.....when I read that my mind began to wander to the likes of the true pioneers that first came to Montana and settled on this amazing stretch of dirt and stone.....

20190911_101301-1200x2469.jpg

What a great place to waste the days away.....

We've also been back to the Garden of One Thousand Buddhas a few more times. It really is a nice place to walk and think.....I enjoy myself here.....

20190910_172852-778x1600.jpg

Not too far to the north is the National Bison Range.....one more real nice spot to hang out and waste the day away.....

20190911_125301-1600x778.jpg

I've watched the Bison quite a bit the past two weeks.....they seem often to be on the move.....

20190913_093912-1600x778.jpg

20190913_093712-1600x778.jpg

I've encountered some other wildlife as well. I was squeezing myself between two strands of barb wire fencing when I noticed this guy about a foot away from my eyes.....he was just having a meal from the bush filled with fall berries.....

20190913_110026-778x1600.jpg

This black bear walked right by me while I was standing in a parking lot on a phone call. He was on his way to the same tree that I was picking apples from earlier. It was funny watching him standing on his rear feet with his head stuck up into the tree.....

20190912_125643-1600x778.jpg

Since I've been unable to find the log cabin of my dreams I've been considering buying a raw piece of land and building my own. I was out walking on a property when I nearly stepped on this guy and probably would have if had not been the sound of his rattlers that warned me of his presence.....maybe two feet away at most. It was interesting that the sound was much more like a swarm of bees, as opposed to the sound of rattlers.....not my first encounter with a rattlesnake but never before had I heard that sound from one.....

20190916_184820-1600x778.jpg

I've looked at a few pieces of property.....one had a beautiful stream.....

20190913_115050-778x1600.jpg

Another had great views.....I built rock cairns at my would be house corners and tried to envision living on the side of that mountain.....

20190912_171411-1600x778.jpg

It's a difficult choice.....the wooded properties with the trees and the sounds of the streams are amazing.....as are the wide open properties with the just as amazing sunrises and the sunsets....

Questions:

Do snakes eat berries?!?
Do the woods have as many neighbors as the open grasslands?
Does a creek/stream = a better water source than a well?
Can we have some more pics of your dogs in the grass? Those are always fantastic!

The pic with the cairns, Tanner looks like he might be trying to get a feel for what his views might be in the future as well?
Keep on keeping on!
