Thanks!

The 4:30’s are replaced with 4:88’s.

Yeah, OME’s for sure at least in the front. I haven’t looked around to see if their available for the rear yet.

235/85-16 MT’s

Keep us posted on how it behaves with the new 4.88s, rpms/highway drivability/mpg/etc...

I'm still leaning toward the 4.636s with 235/85-16 ATs on my project but will be anxious to hear your impressions on the 4.88s.

Is the new Toyota front diff 7.5"?

ARB must offer a locker...

The truck looks great, must be pretty satisfying to be nearing the end of your long term build/check list.

I haven’t installed the rear gears yet, I’m waiting till I switch tires.
It’s a 8” in the front.
Yeah, that axle is one of the most popular axles out there, you can get about any locker that’s made. You can also adapt the Toyota e-locker.
It will never end! LOL

Hey, I was wondering what the dimensions of that montero rear axle were? Maybe what years and trim level they came on? I'm dreaming of doing a delica build and I have a feeling it's similar in size. Factory air on a delica would be ?.

They are 59" WMS to WMS
Only the Montero's with the SR or Winter package will have the locker (you'll see the locker switch in front of the shifter next to the cigarette lighter. You will also need to grab the little air pump from under the rear seat.
95-96 has 4.636 axle ratio
97-99 has 4.272 axle ratio
There is a 4.90 ratio that came in some Montero Sports that have the 3.5L engine but the locker version is extremely rare. You can however swap those r&p's into the Montero 3rd's that have the locker, this is what I just did.

I finally got my axle ratio swapped out to the 4.90's to correctly gear for the 235/85-16 Cooper STT Pro tires that I just ordered.

Ouch. The outcome looks similar to what happened when my truck was rear-ended on a muddy, wet highway in Baja: the truck was fine...

Truck_Jan2016B 3.jpg

But , the car that hit me.... not so fine.

I was lucky: On a previous trip with a larger group, I was carrying gear in a tow-hitch carrier rack.

I got rear ended today destroying my custom rear bumper and the body panel behind it. I think the frame may be bent down a tad as well. I did fare better than the mini van though...

Is 3000 RPM a good highway cruising number for a 4D56t?

I'm not certain, Jeff would have better first hand experience... I'd love to know what the cruising RPM and MPG are at 70 MPH running the 4.88s and 235/85R16s.

I've seen it mentioned that the 4D56t/D4BF tends to enjoy revving more so than the earlier 4D55t, as well as most diesels in general, but that fuel economy starts to suffer significantly beyond +/- 3000 RPM.

My person experience with 4 cylinder Japanese motors indicates 3000 RPM is a healthy general ceiling for longer, sustained use to keep the motor happy and efficiency up.

I'm intending to run a 4.636 / 235/85R16 combo with the V5MT1 in order to cruise at 70 mph while spinning +/- 2,850 RPM; anticipating optimum MPG to be achieved somewhere in the 2400-2850 RPM (60-70 MPH) range depending upon externalities (temps/wind/terrain/load/etc):

I assume Jeff kept the Mazda transmission which is 0.816 5th which is nice. IIRC the 2wd Mazda trans is 0.719 which I would really like. I'm still running the KM145 in my '88 which is 0.856

I believer you're right, please correct us if any of this is incorrect Jeff, the following graph is based on these specs (https://www.blocklayer.com/rpm-gear.aspx):

-Cooper STT Pro's in 235/85-16 = 31.89" OD - http://us.coopertire.com/tires/discoverer-stt-pro
-Mazda 5mt = 3.370 / 2.158 / 1.396 / 1.000 / .816 - http://mazdafanclub.com/download/b2200_1992.pdf:
-4.88 gears
