Navigation Training

You might want to check out the local orienteering clubs. We've substituted some of their events for our yearly SAR land-nav exercise before. They usually have beginner workshops and lots of very experienced people you can learn from. The one in Anza Borrego was a blast.

I teach map and compass, GPS and alternative land navigation for our Search and Rescue unit. Just last week I was at the Arizona State SAR conference teaching map and compass to SAR teams from all around the state.

Anyone in AZ that wants an organized land navigation class contact me....

otherwise - not so hard.
find a large stretch of primitive land. relatively flat.
lay out a triangle on a sketch map .... with bearings for each leg.
go hike the triangle, and see how close you get to your starting point when you get back.
this is a great little exercise, and not nearly as easy as it sounds.

HINT: park your truck so its clearly visible on a backroad. make yourt starting point somewhere
on that road, where you can see the truck from the start. otherwise when you get back, you
can do a lot of walking to find your vehicle.
