Northwest MogFest 2009

Hello to all,

When you look back at the end of your days, what will you say about the summer of 2009? Will it be that you survived the panic of the Swine Flu? Will it be that the economic forecast still had you bummed? Will it be that, once again, the summer flew by in a blur and one day was just like the one before? How can these summer doldrums be avoided? Do what we plan to do. CELEBRATE!!!

In honor of 2009 being the tenth anniversary of Northwest MogFest, we are going to host "The Ten Days of MogFest" (and will have song with lyrics to match). That is right! You read correctly! TEN DAYS!!! Starting Friday, August 14th and running through Sunday, August 23rd, we are going to be pulling out all the stops to make this year's NWMF celebration the biggest and best ever. In years past, we would run a four day gathering on the third weekend in August. That was all well and good but there is only so much fun one can cram into ninety-six hours. With new activities being added each year, it just made sense to expand the number of days..

For those traditionalists, the final four days, the 20th-23rd, will be packed
solid with action and mischief. If you could only make one day this year, the
biggest/busiest day will be Saturday, August 22nd. For those wanting to arrive earlier than the 20th, mixed in with the fun will be some labor as well.
Remember, NWMF has always been and shall remain, a labor of love. The Good Karma points you earn by helping out will be repaid many times over in the future. The last four days of the event will be the most structured ones with the first six having far more flexibility and "hanging-out". As long as the tech equipment holds out, the Waldersee Film Festival will run all ten nights with some of the most obscure and bizarre films ever seen. Ethnic food nights, pot lucks, a chili cook-off, impromptu trail rides into the Trask are just a smattering of the type of activities that will start on Day 1 and run all ten days

For those who either own or just have an interest in vehicles of European
ancestry that are not phased by changing terrain, this August will present an
unrivalled opportunity to feast and frolic in the friendly festivities that have
become Northwest MogFest. Unimogs, Pinzgauers (4x4 and 6x6), Haflingers, VW Syncros, Volvo C-series (4x4 and 6x6), Land Rovers, Range Rovers, French Lohr, Russian Dnepr and Urals, VW Iltis, Swedish Hagglunds, MB G-wagens, VW Typ 181, Hanomag, MB busses, Sprinter Vans and VW Westfalias have been part of our history thus far. Honorary "Euro-Passes" have been awarded to the likes of a Hummer, a US Army Mule, a Mighty Mite, 2WD Rokons, Westcoaster Mailster and a select few domestic and Japanese vehicles on rare occasion. While we can only guess who and what will be here this go 'round, be confident that the spectrum of both people and vehicles will be broad to say the least. A Tatra? An original VW Typ 82 Kubelwagen and/or Typ 166 Schwimmwagen? A Yugo tractor? Lada Nivas?
Coots? We will all have to wait and see. Ultimately, it will be up to each of
you to decide: do I participate.or watch from the distance? We hope many of you will choose to join in as we celebrate our tenth anniversary. Keep your eyes on the NWMF website http://www.northwestmogfest.com
for details. There will be additional announcements coming over the next six
weeks. One early request is to bring any old license plates you would like
immortalized on our shop. License plates are going to play a big role this year.

Take care.

I'll be there for Saturday the 22nd. Unfortunately I won't be able to bring either of my trucks, but it should be fun to check everything out! Anybody else going?

Mike, Thanks for posting the link to Bill Caid's page. As I look at the human participants, it looks like many are wearing those disposable ID bracelet like you might find a music festival or something. Am I seeing things that aren't there?

I wasn't at NWMF '09 due to the need to attend a memorial service in the Midwest, but my friend David Ashley tells me it was a yellow one-time-use bracelet that was basically so everyone could tell that the person wearing it had been through the check-in procedure.

Part of this was bookkeeping for the (extremely modest) entrance fees, but David remarked that it also improved security, the thought being that if you saw someone without the bracelet wandering around the campsites or climbing into vehicles, you'd at least keep you eyes on them a bit more.

I think another factor is liability (watch my video).... You had to sign a waiver at the gate to get the bracelet.

I took pictures of mounting systems on the various trucks at Mogfest, I think I'll post that over in the big mounting systems thread in the Mitsubishi forum since it's not Mog-specific.

Good to see all the pics here, I was all packed up and ready to go and that pesky work thing got in the way! I will make it next year for sure... unless that pesky work thing gets in the way.

Uber-mogger and fine photographer Ryan Gerrish has posted up the half a zillion pictures he took at Northwest Mogfest '09. If you'd like to get a great feel for what the event is like, you should look at these. Lots of trucks to oogle, but also scenes of the farm, the activities, and the ambience.

You won't know the people, or the dogs ;), but if you'd like to have a sense of what it's like to be at NWMF on a pleasant August weekend, Ryan's photos may be the next best thing to being there.

Looks like fun. If I had known about it I think I would have gone, I sure would have enjoyed it.

Trying to read, I could not even figure out where it was! I did find that the nearest parts store and safeway were in Oragan, so at least I knew that much... I am just saying that perhaps more dirrections and how to sign up would have been good.

Again, I did not find out about it until it was too late, but if I had known I would have gone there on my way to yellowstone this summer. (which by the way was wonderful!)

Held annually at Waldersee Farm, an Oregon Century Farm owned by our gracious hosts, James and Emilie Molloy. It's barely to the west of Sheridan, Oregon, a small town on OR Highway 18, one of the principal routes to the Oregon Coast from Portland, which is about 50 miles to the northwest.

It's almost always held on the third full weekend in August--August 19-22 in 2010--but the main thing to remember is that the website (up year-round) is northwestmogfest.com. As you do your summer plans, check there for dates, maps and other information.
