Off-road Heavy Duty Casita Build

After we returned from our NM/AZ trip, it was time to get started on the rear platform to hold the spare and for additional storage. The owner of the storage unit put a stop to all our metal fabrication (we were renting a generator, bringing it to the storage unit, and fabricating all weekend). It was against the rules, but the owner was pretty cool and let me finish the last day to get the core of the structural steel completed before the trip.

For the platform, we were able to fabricate this separately in our single car garage at our apartment. I had a piece of 4x4 square tubing left over from the bumper, so we built a mock up assembly of the actual bumper. We used this to fabricate the platform, then would cut it off to install on the actual trailer bumper.

I had a lot of different ideas on how I wanted to do this, and tons of different things to take into account. I had seen other designs on Casita’s, but I could not be happier with how our design turned out. I probably spent 20-30 hours racking my brain drawing rudimentary iPad sketches on different possibilities. There were pro’s and con’s to so many different options. One “easy“ option, was to just build a platform straight out of the bumper. With this, I felt like you use some departure ground clearance, plus the spare tire would take up a decent chunk of space on top. The company that installed my axle had modified another Casita and they built the platform this way. I didn’t care for that.

My other thought was to build the platform elevated, and have the spare tire sit underneath the platform, parallel to the ground, like if it was under a SUV or truck bed. This would have required the platform to be at least 32” or more from the rear of the trailer.

My last idea, which I ultimately settled on, was having the spare tire mount similar in position to it’s factory location, then have a platform above it that is 60” wide (bumper is 64”) and 32” in depth. I also had to take the license plate into consideration, so I needed each leg of the platform to be 11.5” in from the outside of the bumper, so the support would land right in the center of my license plate, where there’s no letters or numbers.

Here’s a screenshot of my different sketches for the build. Like I said, they are very rudimentary, but I didn’t need them perfect or to scale, just something that I can understand and fabricate from. I deal with engineered drawings all day at work in my line of oil & gas and could have used bluebeam to generate something more professional, but there was no need. The top row, second from the left is the ultimate sketch of what I ended up with. The photo to the right is from a rear view without the spare tire. Middle row, far left is looking down. To the right of that is one of my “other” ideas I mentioned above. Middle row, second to the right is the material takeoff weights for the steel I added. It was just a close evaluation based on my design at the time to ensure I wasn’t throwing the trailer off balance by adding too much weight to the front or back.

The critical 11.5”. My actual bumper is 64” wide, and my scrap piece of 4x4 was only like 48”, so I had to go through the math a million times to not mess this up.

In this photo, you can see that the orientation of the middle 2x3 is different, and it is spaced out 2” further. Once installed, you’ll see why I had to do this. The rear of the Casita is rounded, so this needed to be cheated forward for the supports to somewhat match the contour of the trailer.

With the platform being completed in the garage, we brought the trailer to our apartment for a final test fit before welding to the bumper and having the frame coated.

I was originally quoted $1300 for the coating, but upon picking it up, he said he’d take $1100 cash. I certainly couldn’t pass up a discount. Overall coating looked good. He did a bed liner on all steel exposed to the sun, and an undercoat on everything underneath.

Nice work, I have a 17 SD Casita with a 300 lb utv elevated cargo carrier attached to a receiver hitch. Last summer I spent an hour on the side of US77 in Lott Tx pulled over by a young prick cop because the last 2 numbers on the license plate were obscured by the cargo carrier when viewed from the right side. My leaf spring 5k axle conversion ended up with 5 1/2” of lift. I have 225 15 tires currently, measured wheel wells, looks like 32” will fit. What size are you running? 4ACED554-806B-45A1-B64C-80C351DB17B0.jpeg

You have some good lift on there! Our license plate is good straight from the back but if a cop really wanted to nitpick, he certainly could. Worse case scenario we‘d move the plate to the spare tire. Wanted to avoid that if possible, however.

Our tires are 265/75r16 Toyo ATII, which comes out to a 31.5” tire.

License plate problems: Even factory pickup trucks have recessed license plates in the bumper. You can't see all the markings at anything less than 45 degrees from the bumper. As long as it is completely visible from the rear I would point out any brand of pickup and tell him to pound sand. He is making up crap just so he can be nosey. Hoping he hits on something. Don't get me wrong I am not cop hating, just they use tactics hoping they find something bigger.

Exactly what I was thinking at the time. Asked me where I was going, where had I been, etc. Looking for an excuse to search. Old deep south Texas attorney and my step mother attorney told my kids to never consent to a search, get a warrant even if you sit for 2 hours. I was waiting for that to happen.

You should be around methanol and ethanol 12 hours a day and driving home late at night. Being stopped for something very trivial and accused of drinking. Being disabled the roadside sobriety test don't work for me. I finally put a stop to it by inviting one a very polite officier that showed an interest in my work a tour of the race shop and engine shop I work in. Small town USA you got to love it when every officer you pass now waves at you.

After getting the frame all coated and complete, it was time for the tongue platform. This has around a 300-350 lb capacity and is built like a tank. Normally, something like this I’d be happy to fabricate, but the cost/reviews for this made it worthwhile to save the time/money. I have a 2000 watt Yamaha generator that runs the trailer/AC pretty good, but filling it with the manual Jerry cans is a pain, especially late at night at the beach in the dark. Easy to overflow it, etc. I also needed more tongue weight since I can now store so much on the rear.

The correction to this was a 12 gallon gravity fed fuel tank with handheld pump. Originally, this was also intended to be spare fuel for the 4runner, however I have since replaced that with a diesel (more to come).

On the platform, I can fit both the gas tank as well as the 2000 watt generator.

Loading that tongue up some

It needs it, and more! Fully loaded it’s just under 10% of trailer weight. If I load up the rear platform much it’ll be way under. I want the tongue to be closer to 15%.
I’m going to start reworking the tongue to swap the hitch out and jack out, and add more steel to reinforce the new hitch. This will add a much needed 70 lbs or so.

Ok wow, yeah that's low! Good spot for those things in that respect and hopefully avoids turbulence because it's behind tow vehicle.
Where is the fresh water tank on this trailer?
I suffer from excessive tongue weight on my pop up but don't travel with water in the tank
We are looking at Escape 17A and 19, and the 19 has dual lead acid batteries on the tongue along with two propane tanks so I'm expecting a high tongue there as well

The Fresh water tank is behind the rear axle, so that’s another 25 gallons to take into consideration. The holding tanks (black and grey) are both towards the front, so after a trip it’ll be more tongue heavy, however also the propane may be reduced a bit to offset. It’s all a balancing act. While I had the 4Runner it really needed focus, but with the F250 I have now, I can be way more flexible.

The Escapes are nice trailers, my only hold up on the Escapes and Big Foots was the cabinetry. For off-road/bump usages, the molded fiberglass will be way more durable in the long run than your standard iffy quality cabinet construction in most trailers.

Very nice upgrades on the suspension !

With rough roads, do you ave any issues with interior items opening or breaking off ?

So far so good! The only thing people mention that happens occasionally is rivets. We haven’t experienced any yet.

On the interior, there’s really minimal items that we could have issues with.

Admittedly, off road and gravel we go pretty slow. Never in a major hurry that would be worth running into potential issues.
