I have a pair of the Mountain Khaki Utility pants that I got a few years back, unfortunately I gained a few lbs and I haven't worn them since. When I did wear them they where bomber and a joy to climb in.

A few months back I was headed out to the desert near Blythe when I realised I had forgotten to pack pants. I stopped off at the red neck mecca, the Bass Pro Shop and picked up a few pair of their Red Head khakis. I have to say that apart from the fact that they are from the Bass Pro Shop they are a well made pair of pants and have since held up well on climbing trips to day hikes and are the most comfortable pair of pants I own. At $19 they are a steal.

While picking up some uniform shirts at Long Beach Uniform Supply I picked up a pair of khaki 5.11 Tactical Pants. The fit is a little strange, I have to wear a belt with them and I hate wearing belts. Since they were made for LEO's who wear belts as part of their uniforms I guess it's not a surprise.

One trend I have noticed is the "low rise" waist that just about everyone carries. They suck. For a utilitarian type of pants guy, it just doesnt work. Cant wait for the trend to end.

You mean as in plumbers crack :D
I am wearing my Gall 5.11 pants as I type.
I dug them out of the closest last night.
Still a little tight in the waist, and I too noticed that I need to wear a belt to make them stay up.
Very strange considering how I had to pull to close the snap around my waist.

And yes, they hang low in the back, and I do not like it with the old crack hanging out when I bend over.
I do not have that problem with the Columbia GPS pants or others I own.

I have one pair of mtn. khakis that I picked up and my only complaint is they shrink. I think I got a 32/30 and I wish i would have gotten a 32/32 other than that I love the pants. I also have a pair of patagonia ducks pants and those are really sweet also.

Gotta return them, and they did come today.
Their sizing is to small, and the belt inside the sewn loops is all messed up.
I am not impressed with the quality at all of the Mountain Hardware Mesa pants.

Will continue my quest for the perfect pair of cargo type pants.

I am very interested in the Railriders stuff. It's pricey but it looks well built and tough as nails.

Railriders stuff is tuff, very tuff. I wound up jabbing my thigh with a metal post with resultant 1/2" long, and at least as deep cut. Not a mark on the pants.

I like the "extreme adventure" pants, you will not wear these out.

Downside? Yep. The sizing is weird. The legs are very long for the waist size. They have a special order 30" inseam available now. And the belt loops are all over the map. Some about an inch wide for starbucks style nylon fake belts. Some an inch and half. Havent seen any 1 3/4" yet, but mentioned it to the owner. Gets expensive spending $100 on the pants and another $25 getting usable loops sewn on.

I just spent bulk of a week wearing the Duluth Trading Co. fleece lined "Firehose" pants while in the middle of Nevada. I'm impressed. I wonder if I'll be able to wash out the wood smoke?

I do not like cargo pants. I cut the thigh pockets off of BDU's. They only stick out and hang up on stuff like cacti.

I have two pairs of Rail Riders Weatherpants that I was given to test out.
These pants are tough for a fast drying nylon pant. My goto expo paint.

Other expo quick drying pants that I have to compare them to are ExOfficio Amphi pants. #1 in warm weather and fastest in drying. These just do not cut it in the thorns.

Arcterx Palisade pant is a slim fitting pant that works well in fast scrambles up mountains after work. Dry quick and 3way strech fabric that has a light water repelent.

Patagonia Field Pants (discontinued) Like the GI paints but with a button and fly. My old goto expo pant. These I could wear to the office every day but mine have too many burn holes from sitting too close to a :campfire: I would say these are like light duty Rail Riders.

My REI convertible pants are nice but the zipper broke early and I made a field repair so REI would not take them back.

And last I have a pair of Columbia pants that is tough as the rail riders but they are built using the heavy material throughout not just on the seat and knees like the Rail Riders.

And for Rail Riders and Exofficio using bug repelent in their products. I'll pass. I will put on bug dope when I need it. I just do not want it for every day use.

My personal preference for travel is a nice, ,classic, boot cut jean. I have a couple pair of Hudson's that, for me, just work. I can comfortably muck about all day in them, throw on a fresh layer of pit juice, perhaps a change of shirt, and blamo, I'm ready for a nice night out on the town. Hard to beat good old denim for versatility.
