tire arm struts?

hello all. i am in the process of drawing up a bi-fold spare tire rack for my burb. i would like to use the "hinge type struts to keep the swing arms open. i cannot figure out how i would measure this to purchace the proper length. any ideas?

Before I can begin to give a proper answer, I need to know one little detail: to what angle do you want the swing out to open? Most people go to 90º or a little past. If you don't know exactly, just throw me a number to work with, and I can start getting you some figures.

Its pretty simple.. just measure the closed length, and the open length, add in a little leverage/physics understanding for mounting positions, and go from there.

hello guys,

thank you for the pics to get an idea stump. Sam, the angle.... i will find out the angle of my rear suburban doors and let you know. if you look at the above pic ot stump's jeep i need it to open a bit farther. i will measure in the next few days and try to post a pic.
