I've owned a lot of VWs over the years but none of the road worthy versions were particularly interesting. They were all fun and apart from day to day use I did a fair bit of camping with them. During the 70s I built and raced VW based cars in the Canadian Off Road Racing Association (C.O.R.R.A.) series. On good days the tracks were dry but we got into a lot of mud too. I got out for a bit of ice racing in the winter. The cold was bad but the real problem was all the snow and ice that was shot back at you by other racers. It sure paid to be out front! VW ice fishing in the winter was more my style. :rolleyes:

Has anyone tried one of these under floor battery boxes;

I am considering using one to free up room in the van but I am concerned what would happen if I crossed a river?

Any thoughts?

Van Life Beetle

Here's my 73 super beetle "overland" build. I like the ridiculousness of things like off road beetles and "overlanding" in a microcar. It is fun, it's unique, and it allows me to be creative. I lifted the car as soon as I bought it in 2017 but about a year ago I started an gear company www.vanlifegearcompany.com and I wanted to build something that shows that your "van" can be anything and doesn't need to be a $100,000 built-out Mercedes sprinter van. I'm not sleeping in this tiny car unless I have to but it works great for getting out to cool places and tent camping.

I lifted it, put in nicer seats. Pulled out the back seats and made a cargo area for gear and/or the dog. Added a roof rack with a shade awning and a mount for my traction mats and mud shovel. A bunch of other modifications, but I'll save the extensive details for another post.

Van life, that's nice, what made you go with a super?
Doesn't really matter still fun as hell.

Honestly it was because when I bought it I didn't know squat about VWs. You might say I bought it by mistake. Instead of selling it and getting a standard beetle I decided to roll with the punches and let the obstacle of lifting and modifying a super become an opportunity to do something a little different and get creative.
