Who has his Yaesu connected to a laptop

I was wondering if it´s possible to connect my yaesu to my laptop.
Is there someone who tried this?
I would like to hear how and pictures would be greet.

I know Alvaro and many of the Norcal Wagons guys have accomplished this. IIRC it was only to load in the repeaters and set up the radio. He is radio savy and computer literate, and understands sending the signal through repeaters , the computer and Echolink.

for what purpose? programming with the CAT interface or via the mic/speaker to send data?
Both are doable with most of the modern yeasu radio';s

I'm not sure the question is sufficiently clear. "Data transfer" takes several forms. Do you want to use your laptop to program your radio's memories, or are you interested in packet radio, APRS or some other form of sending data over the air to another radio?

BTW is it possible to turn a kenwood TM-V7E into a repeater??

Packet radio requires a TNC (Terminal Node Controller) like this Kantronics KPC3+:

This goes between your computer and the radio, much like a modem.

What are you looking to do with packet? Depending on your goals, other technology may be more appropriate. For example, as hams we can run high power ( I believe up to 200 watts) on standard WiFi 802.11 frequencies. This means we can have a wireless network that our neighbors would only dream of! (of course all Amateur Radio rules apply)

Packet radio on 2 meter isn't going to give you any high-speed connectivity, it's more about sending text messages and the like.

Depending on what you want to accomplish, there are technologies to explore.

skip the TNC go with something like this
http://www.tigertronics.com/signalnk.htm The USB version. Its basicly a usb sound card and rig controller in one. will do packet as well as other digital modes.

But the TNC can work as a stand alone mailbox, or APRS beacon or digi without your computer around. The sound card interface needs a computer all the time.
