Differences between Montero SR and LS?

Don't quote me on this, but I believe the SR was the top of the line model with more amenities and a locking rear diff. It also had the 3.5 v6 while the LS models had the 3.0 SOHC. The SR had more power.

I'm sure off-roader will chime in shortly, he is the expert on these trucks.

LOL, I don't know about that. Far from an expert.

You're quite right about the engine & HP/Torque improvements. The locking diff obviously. A larger rear diff housing with a massive 9.5" ring gear.

Also trim differences (leather, etc.).

For a wheeler, the SR is the way to go if you can find/buy one but you can also upgrade an LS buy swapping in the SR rear axle system (housing, dif/locker, axles). Then you don't have to worry about tearing up the plastic fenders that only come with the SR off road..

I'm not sure but gearing on the 94-96SR is 4.6x while gearing on the 98's with the locker (no longer SR) is 4.2x. The 97, may have already switched to the higher gearing which is not preferred if you want to put on larger tires.
